Madeline Askins: Project 4 Serial Slicing

 


Concept: The requirement for this project is to create a mythical creature out of serial laser cuttings. I went into references and found many fairies and plant-like creatures. From this, I decided to create a mushroom-themed fairy. Most of my inspiration came from the art on Pinterest and artist list. I decided to not give the fairy a face but a mask to make it look less human. The hair is made of mushrooms since you cannot create hair in laser cutting. Lastly, the model is made with all organic material making it easier to assemble.






Process: In the process of creating models in rhino I used many SubD commands to create organic material. Within SubD is the SubD plane which would create a surface with faces within it. When you click on SubD extrude you can extrude the surfaces where you like. If you hold down shift and extrude you can extrud one face which creates protruding parts in the model. If you click shift and click a face you can manipulate the face where you want in to go. With these tools, I was able to create base shapes. To get both sides of the model to reflect I clicked SubD Reflect which would place a line down the center of the model and any command you did on one side would happen to the other, With this, both sides could be equal. Lastly in order to connect the arms and pieces of the head I would delete one face where it would connect and click the SubD bridge. When you click open holes where the model should connect both objects will mech together into one. With all of these commands, I was able to create the organic model in rhino.


Rendering: In rendering, I placed my model into Keyshot and grounded it. I then added the cardboard texture over it. Lighting would change on the angle because I wanted the front to light up more. I used a gray background and the countertop background in Keyshot. The only issue I had was that the poles at the bottom would always stick out when I imported the model to Keyshot.










Fabrication: For fabrication, I layered the cardboard cutouts in through the poles to stabilize them. I then glued each layer together. The mushrooms on the top had to be glued separately to make sure they did not break off before taping it. After I glued it I wrapped the base and individual pieces in tape. I then glued the mushrooms on top at home. I then bought DAS air-dry modeling clay. The clay was the trickiest part of the project. For the clay, I would use it to layer onto the tape to give it a mushroom texture. I started by wrapping below the head in clay and detailing textures through it with tools. I would consistently spray it with water to ensure it stayed wet till I was finished. I could not let it dry without wrapping it in damp towels. I did this because if you let clay with thin parts dry the edges will dry faster than the base causing it to shrink and crack. If dried slowly with equal moisture it will not crack. This did take 24 hours to dry but it did not crack or crumble at all. Even small details remained intact and strong. I finished the head and let that dry too. On the final day, I painted the entire model in acrylic. I wanted to fairly to have a camouflaged look since it was a forest creature. most of the model is brown tones but the face is bright white and red. The only issue I had with this part is the paint hiding some textures I made in clay.






















Kira Gray- Project 4: Serial Slicing

 Concept:



 
For my sketches, I drew a doglike creature with a mushroom hat, a more creepy tree-inspired creature, and another doglike creature but with antler looking branches coming out of its head. I ultimately decided on the doglike creature with the mushroom cap, as I thought it would be both more fun to model and best for a serial slicing project, in addition to simply being cute.


Process:

For my process, I used SubD commands to create the more organic shapes. I created the nose and ears shapes using the primitive Plane command, then duplicated it and used bridge to create a 3-dimensional shape. The hat was created using four Cone commands, two of which were flattened to create the two brims. Once every shape was in place, I used Boolean Combine to make the model into one shape. I found the way my model looked in the Render port in Rhino to be very aesthetically pleasing, which is why I included the photo here.

For the extruded version of the model, I used the Contour command as instructed to create the X-Curves, then the Extrude command at 0.25 inch intervals to create the serial sliced look. I created two long cylinders of a 0.25 inch diameter to mimic the wooden dowels I would use in my actual model, and used Boolean Difference in order to model the holes that would run through my model.

In Keyshot, I used a red and white plastic material as it would give me the solid glossy shine my paint would have in reality. For my actual model, I used newspaper to paper mache over the raw cardboard, and then paint over the top. I used a white spray paint for the base, and then painted over it with red, pink, and white where necessary. In my orthographic picture, I decided to include a picture from the top view, as I found the way the hat looks from above interesting.

Benjamin Ramirez: Project 4 - Serial slicing

 Concept:

            For my concept, I wanted to create a character that would look very different from others. The collage that was used for the concept was very random. I took a little bit of each creature and made my own. The creatures I used to help me create this model are, 4 eyed goat, wolf, unicorn, sea monster, dragon, and Cerberus. Creating this model was model was very fun to do. I wanted to include horns that look like the model. I created a V shaped part in the middle of the face.

 




Process:

            The process that was used to create this model would be mainly in SubD tab in order to create the ears, head and neck. I had used The Line and Curve Tool to create the eyes and the V shape horns. The second tool I used was the Scale Command, I used that with a spherical SubD to create the head shape from the top to the bottom of the Model. Creating its shape to give a good model representation of what I wanted to create. The third command I used was the reflect command, this command is one of the best ones to use. It saves you two times the amount of time for you to not struggle making it proportionate. The fourth command is Boolean Union command, used to combine everything in the model. To make it as one which make everything look a lot cleaner. The fifth command is, Contour. Used to create flat layers to represent how the model would look when laser cutting the carboard. As well as using it as a guide to understand what would work and what won’t work. The carboard that was used a .25-inch thick carboard, that was 24’ x 48’ rectangle carboard.

 



Rendering & Fabrication:

            In rendering in keyshot I used the contour model to show how it would look like with the carboard glued together. I for the renders I used white matte paint, which is what I used to paint in the post processing part of the model. When the model was put together, I used painters’ tape to make a smoother layer before I would continue the process. Secondly, I would start to papier Mache. Using Elmer’s glue and mixing it with water in a 5 to 1 ratio. It allowed me to control the glue more so it would not be way too strong. The toughest part of Paper Mache would be getting the curves or small edges. Those were very hard to even get around, after that would be completed. I started to paint the model, the idea is to go for a black and white theme, in order to achieve the mysterious look, I wanted for it. 










Jason Hollander - Project 4 - Serial Slicing

 Inspiration

    For inspiration for my serial slice I went for some of my favorite creatures from fictional series and myths. For my images I went for the leshen from the Witcher,  centaur and Cerberus from Greek mythology,  the hell pit abomination and skaven clanrat from Warhammer fantasy, a space marine and tyrranid from Warhammer 40k, a anubite from Egyptian mythology, and Cthulhu. i settled on combining  the skaven calnrat and space marine together. while drawing it out i wanted it to just be a heavily armored rat.







Process

    My process for making my serial slice was I wanted to keep it close to what I originally drew out but certain design aspects such as the how the pipes connected to the head and the tanks on the back i also removed the knife on the head because it looked weird. I made the teeth a piece of the armor and how the rat speaks and breathes I designed and air filter and voice box.














Materials

    For my model I went for the colors of space marine chapters of the ultramarines which is blue. I made the whole of the armor blue, the pipes carbon fiber, and all of the accents around the eyes and pipes brass. i made the voice box brass and the air filter silver. I also made the shoulders studded.


Final product 

     I think my rat came out great except for the air filter and voice box did come out good I wrapped it in masking tape and paper Mache. I painted it exactly like my render on the pipes I dropped some gold paint on them I wiped it off and it left a weathering effect so I put it on all the pipes. around the eyes and the end of the pipes i put clay to bring out the accents more. and on the shoulder to add the effect of studs i add sticky dots on the shoulder but only had enough for one shoulder.

Josh Rainey Project 5 - Prosthetic Model

Design/Inspiration

 For this project, I took inspiration from captain hook in “once upon a time”. I really feel like he has a basic, yet nice hook for his hand. For this assignment, I tried to recreate it.






Modeling Techniques


For this design, most of the commands that were needed were very basic. Mostly, I used the boolean command to combine a few of the objects. When I went to clean up the design I used the Filleted Command in order to reshape some of the edges.


Rendering

 The material I choose was a basic metal, as most of the pirate hooks and prosthetics are made of metal. I tried to make the actual bottom section of the hook more of a wooden color, but I’m not 100% sure it looks right. For the detail, I tried to keep it to a minimum as most of these prosthetics are straightforward pieces.
