Kaylie Moore: Week 13 3D Scanning

Concept
I worked with Charlene to scan a conch shell. I wanted to see how well the process worked with a complex shape like a shell. I also thought it would make an interesting, somewhat abstract sculpture.

Process
We first did a 360 scan of the shell with the curved opening face down, as we thought it might not scan well. We then stood it up to get a scan of the top of the scan and aligned both the scans before moving it into RapidWorks. In RapidWorks we used the Mesh Buildup Wizard and filled a number of holes in the model to give it more cohesiveness, as the complexity of our object left the initial scans looking incomplete. After polishing the model and trimming out a number of unconnected, floating pieces, we exported the model into Keyshot to render in passes and place in an architectural setting.

Materials
I chose a metallic material for the shell to emphasize the complexity of the shape and to play with the reflections off of the various spikes and ridges. I chose to place it in the fountain, as I thought the water suited both the material and the subject. To better integrate the model into the environment I added a reflection and shifted it up slightly to give it the appearance of being partly submerged, used Photoshop to add slight green and blue tints to the reflections, and increased the contrast by editing the diffuse pass.


Justin Chang: Week 13 Laser Engraving


Concept: The design I chose to be engraved onto my skateboard deck is a map of Dallas, TX. The inspiration for my selection is my major in Geospatial Information Sciences (GIS). Utilizing maps and integrating data within it is a crucial role in GIS. Examples of where this data is used ranges from digitals maps in automobiles, precision agriculture, and forest management.

Techniques: A screenshot was first taken of a map of Dallas, TX. The image was then opened in Adobe Illustrator to create a vector trace by utilizing the image trace tool. I used the rectangle tool to create a reference underneath the map to add the city name “Dallas, TX” with the text tool. The stroke was adjusted to 0.01 pt. I copied my work and pasted it within the setup file and cutting template provided. The only layers that were used were the reference and inner cut layers. The reference layer was used for the laser cutting bed, and skateboard deck and the inner cut layer was used for the map and the text.

Materials: A blank skateboard deck was purchased through Amazon and was sent to the machine shop to be laser engraved by their laser cutter.

Justin Chang: Week 13 3D Scanning


Concept: The object that I used is a handcarved lion that I purchased when I was deployed in Africa. I chose to use the open grass behind the SU as my context because I felt it was appropriate for the lion to placed in a nature element.

Techniques: Two scans were obtained through NextEngine Scan Studio, one standing upright and one laying on its side. I did this to fill in the voids that were showing on the lion’s back. Rapidworks was then used to create a NURBS patch. Poly mesh count was then adjusted to 246. It was then saved as a OBJ file and opened in Rhino to verify for any naked edges. Lastly, it was opened in Keyshot to be placed on a backdrop.

Materials: In Keyshot, the backdrop used is the Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory building. I chose this backdrop because it has plenty of grass shown, so that the lion can be placed in its natural element. Terrazzo Floor Tan was chosen as the material to give the lion a realistic statue look.

Asa Rodriguez Week 12 Laser Engraving

Concept
I use a lot of skull imagery in my art, and have been wanting to use a hyena skull in one for a long time. I decided to add a swirl in the background to create interest in the empty space.

Process
I worked mainly in Photoshop, importing the file into Illustrator afterwards. The skull illustration is a straightforward raster image using opacity to correlate to different engraving depths, and the swirl was created using the Liquify tool. After importing, the file was formatted to the skateboard dimensions.

The piece was engraved on a 7.5" skateboard deck

Concept

We did a 3D scan of a small fake cactus because the shapes are simple but interesting and would make a nice large scale sculpture.


Process

First we did a horizontal scan around the sides of the cactus, then rotated it to get a scan of the top and bottom.  We aligned the data from both scan families and cleaned it up in NextEngine and Rapid Works.  We decided to keep a lower number of polygons because we liked the look and texture it gave to the model.  Once we were satisfied with the model, we imported it into Keyshot to render it in passes and place it in an architectural setting.


Materials

We used a 3D laser scanner and NextEngine to scan the cactus,  Rapid Works to clean up the model, Keyshot to render, and Photoshop to put together the render pass layers and edit the compositions.

Inspiration/Concept:
I decided to base my polyhedron design on one of the gems found in one of my favorite video games, 'Legend of Zelda'. As I try to find something of similar shape and design. So that it was easy to fold and to create in the process. Ironically, this gem in the game costs around 5 dollars in game; same as the price I paid for the laser engraving for this project.

So I decided to go with a paper rhombic pyramid. Since it would be easy to fold and tape together.
Process:
Using what I had on hand in my home, I used the material duct tape to piece my work together. Going with a folding type technique with the tape over and over in a few layers. Came to the final result that I have now. I do not know where I will make use of it in the near future, but it will stay on my desk for now.

Quinn Sherer: Week 12 - Laser Engraving



Concept

For my design, I wanted to use star shapes and incorporate motion in some way, so I made the stars weave in and out from one corner of the space to the other.


Process

I started by drawing and laying out the stars in photoshop, then imported the file into illustrator so I could vectorize the design and make it more crisp and clean.  Then I played around with shading in and around the stars with hatching and lines until I got a design I was happy with.  The lines were too thick to be considered a vector image by the scanner, but it worked well as a raster image.


Materials

I bought a 31x7.5" wooden skateboard deck and had the design laser engraved on the back.
