This design is a two piece carousel utlizing a modified version of the famed optical illusion, in which an image of a vase or cup (postive space) hides the silhouettes of two faces in profile looking at each other (negative space), with differing facial aspects as its contour.   This object can be used in 3 ways
  • When graduated holes are drilled through the platter like top (kinda like the red circles in the above image) and one could place pens, brushes, and flat files through the holes on the platter thereby creating a "creative instraments carousel" for my drafting desk just like an office desk would have an office supply carousel.

  • Holes again are drilled through the platter like top (kinda like the red circles in the above image) and varied colored cellophane is scotch taped over each hole to allow for light to pass into the holes from a flashlight at the base of the carousel to project through the hole and as the platter like top is rotated on its swivel a kaleidoscope of color is therefore projected on the ceiling.
  • A depression is allowed on the surface of the platter so it can be used as a wallet and change caddy for a dresser table.

To create this model a poly cylinder is generated and is repeatedly extruded with each edge loop resized in scale to fit with the contour of a face in profile. At that point the top is extruded inward then downward to make a bowl. Then at the edge loops around the mouth the faces above are deleted and the edge loop is extruded upward slightly and reappended to the structure above, the faces inbetween are deleted. The edges of the holes in both objects are extruded inward then upward to make a pole then while extruding upward tapered into a ball and closed.

The materials used were a cherry wood material for the top and a walnut wood material for the bottom, these choices were to emphasize that each part is a seperate piece of a piece of desk furnature. The lighting is default settings because it just looked right on the piece.

The object was printed at shapeways. Now the Top is $61.98, however due to the functionality of the entire surface (the curvature gives the negative space its shape, the bowl on top adds to its usefulness as a wallet caddy and the bottom is the connection point of the swivel) precludes much in the way of lowering its volume. The Bottom comes in at $27.  Cash has been sent and I have the object despite their use of UPS.

  3. No, you've explained your intent very well. I would like to engage you in a discussion about why you would want to turn your sculpture into a desk appliance.
