Matthew Durham: Week 13 - Laser Scanning

Concept:
For my concept I wanted to have a tentacle popping up in random spots around campus. As if there was a Kraken under the earth.

Scanning Process:
I used NextEngine scanner process to scan the tentacle i carved out of green floral foam. Since i glued it on the quarter-twenty screw i did not have to worry about the aligning the object after words. They only thing i had to do was trim and patch holes in Rapidworks.

Rendering Process:
Once I had all my scan data completed I imported it into Rhino to check edges after i sent it to Keyshot. I used the perspective to get the tentacle positioned correctly and used the sun height and rotation to get the angle correct. After that I did a batch render and brought it into to Photoshop for final editing. For the first render I had to create the reflection on the glass. All I did was make a duplicate of the tentacle, lowered the opacity and then played with the perspective just a little bit.

Durham Matthew Week 11 - Laser engraving

Concept:

For my design I wanted to make a skate board deck that would capture one of my friends personalities while combining the two things she loves. Her dog and anything that deals with skating. Normal i would add the reference photo of her and her dog however her and her family expressed their wishes of it not being shown but where fine with the me being able to show the drawing I did instead.

Technique:

For the technique all I did was draw from a reference photo in Photoshop a picture of her dog. I wanted to keep the drawing simplified. While in the background i have a bohemian esque pattern, that was also drawn in Photoshop. They where then combined and imported into Adobe Illustrator to make the vector and raster lines for it.

Materials:
For my board I used a 38 and 1/2 long board deck. I didn't want to add any paint to the board so i could keep it very minimal, because that is also her style. She likes the looks and feel of organic things. So I felt like just the darker wood from the raster engraving would be enough.

Update: I applied a stain so the recessed part would be a little bit darker.

Matthew Durham Week 10: Cardboard Ball

Concept:
For my costume i want to do a hunter with a skull for a mask. I am basically taking my skull from the 3-d assignment making a low poly model of it and then going to add fur and metal to it to give it a primal feeling.

Techniques:
I will be importing the maya file into rhino and using the reduce mesh reduce the polygons. I then will import into pepakura to get my files and import into photoshop.

Matthew Durham - 3D Printing 2017

Concept:

For my idea i wanted to make an eastern dragon skull. I based the bone structure and cavities of the skull on McGibbs Dragon skull.

Techniques:

For this project I took the dinosaur head from Mudbox imported that into maya and altered it to get a 3-d model for Mudbox. i then sculpted that in Mudbox to get my 3D-model and imported into rhino to check for naked edges.

Materials:

As far as materialize go i kept everything the same because of it being bone.

Matthew Durham: Castle Fall 2017

Concept
My initial idea came from a mixture of ancient Greek origins and art from Disney's Hercules and God of Wars mount Olympus. I wanted the design to have similar elements however while at the same time the throne being its own separate entity.

Techniques:
All my design where based on a circular shape which where just repeated among the castle. For all bases of the circular pavilions I used a cylinder with truncated cones attached to the bottom to give it the tapered look. The throne is made of rectangles that are combined to give it, it's shape. That was then copied and scaled smaller to make the chairs for the smaller pavilions. once I had both the throne pavilion and the smaller circular made I brought out the smaller pavilion and did a polar array and used that to make the other two. After everything was correct I used the circular tool to make the circles, which where then used with the Curve Boolean to make the circle shapes.

Materials:

For colors I wanted to stick with materials that where warm inviting and peaceful. For materials I selected granite for the pavilions to give it the feel of everlasting, like it was built to last. The pillars I used porcelain for the fragility of such belief as well. The throne and chairs where made of marble for the same reason as the pavilions.
