Anna Phengsakmueang: Week 9 Laser Cutting

Concept

As a representation of nature, I based the general structure of the project off of a deer. To reflect the organic shapes that are found within nature, I made the parts of the structure to be more curved rather than sharp. To also balance out the structure, I ensured that the antlers were not to big but were still easily distinguishable to be that of a deer's.

Techniques
FlatFab Deer Creation

Using FlatFab, I began with the general face shape of the deer from the side using the X-axis perspective. Then I started to add more shapes along using the Z-axis perspective to add more dimension to the head of the deer. The added shapes were of the shape of a deer head if one were facing its eyes. The shapes were smaller in the front than the back, to add the realistic dimensions of an actual deer. After the head was created, I began with the neck and body using the same process. However, I did not position the head high enough, so the legs were made smaller in proportion to the rest of the body. Throughout the process of creating the deer, I used the guide tool to help make both sides of each part symmetrical. This tool made it effective when creating the antlers for the head. To finish up, I made sure that each part was connected to another, at least halfway, so that they could attach in a physical format. Once the deer figure was created, I imported the file into Rhino to adjust the cuts and add each aspect of the deer into layers for laser cutting. To adjust the cuts of where the pieces would connect with one another, I duplicated the cut and dragged it past the original while keeping it straight along the edges. This way, the pieces would be properly cut so that they would fit with one another more easily.

The material used to make the deer was a twenty-four inch by forty-eight inch piece of E-Flute cardboard that was 0.06 inch thick, which I sent to the Machine Shop on campus for laser cutting. While rendering it in KeyShot, I chose to use wood materials for the structure of the deer. For the different sections of the parts, I chose a different shade for each piece to add contrast to the subject.

Anna Phengsakmueang Week 8: 3D Printing

Concept:
Pendant Inspiration
Inspired by an anime I previously watched, I thought of creating a crystal pendant similar to the main character's necklace. It was a light blue crystal with wings wrapped around it, both characteristics of which I am fond of. I also wanted to make sure to include a loop for another loop to attach to so that it can be added to a thin chain for an actual necklace. Rather than make it intricate, I preferred a more simpler design, so I chose to make the wings smaller and spread out rather than wrap around the crystal.

To create the crystal, first I made a pyramid and laid it down onto its side. Then, I made a truncated pyramid, laid it on its side, rotated it so that the base lines of the truncated pyramid were parallel to the base lines of the pyramid using several perspective windows and then scaled it so that the bases of the two pyramids would line up together. I wanted to also create a base for the crystal to attach to the part that is connected to the loop for a necklace to go through, so I made a duplicate of the truncated pyramid, scaled it to be a bit larger than the original and used the trim tool to just keep a small portion of the pyramid for the base of the attachment to the loop. To create the part where the crystal would attach to a loop for a necklace, I duplicated the small truncated pyramid I previously made and scaled it to be larger. Throughout making the crystal, I made sure that the bottom edge of the crystal was touching the ground while also scaling the larger portion of the attachment to barely touch it as well. I also ensured to center each piece according to the center of the pyramid half of the crystal shape. After that, I proceeded to merge the two pyramids together using the "Boolean2Objects" command, so that I would get a single crystal as the result to place in a separate layer for rendering. Then I continued to work on the attachment portion of the crystal by using a torus for the loop that the necklace attaches to. To attach the loop to the base of the attachment to the crystal, I used the "Boolean2Objects" command. To enhance the look of the crystal pendant, I deformed a sphere and duplicated five more of it, to create the rings that are on the loop which were each attached using the same command. When I was done creating the general model of the pendant, I separated each portion into layers and checked for any naked edges.

For the materials, I kept it fairly simple. Going off of the inspiration of my design, I went with sapphire for the crystal in KeyShot, and aluminum for the loop attachment. I only used two layers since the pendant comes in two pieces. To add a bit more blue to the crystal itself, I applied a color to the material as well. For the actual print, I chose to get it printed in white, so that I can paint it with metallic acrylic paint later on. Another reason for my choice was so that the colors would show off a bit more on a white background rather than a black one.

Anna Phengsakmueang: Project 1 Castle

Concept
Inspired by Harry Potter novels containing details about Hogwarts castle, I wanted to base off my castle off of a few aspects that appealed to me. To begin with, the towers that seemed to be located in many corners of the castle seemed to create a more surrealistic appeal to draw the line between reality and imagination. However, before adding towers randomly in place, I also needed a basis of where to place each tower. After looking at an image of a simplified, Lego version of Hogwarts, I was able to notice the general layout of the castle. However, the style that I had desired for my castle was much more simpler that the detailed castle of Hogwarts.

When creating the basis of the castle, I began with the creation of the building bases that were rectangular in shape rather than the actual towers. I wanted to be able to figure out where to place each tower while also maintaining a semblance of symmetry for my castle. When placing the rectangular bases, I had also wanted them to form a semi-circle shape. To do so, I added two smaller rectangular bases on one side and rotated one of them to act like a corner piece. Then I reflected the two small bases to the other side to maintain the symmetrical balance of the castle. After creating the five large, rectangular bases, I wanted to add a bit more detail to the castle. Based off of classic castle designs, I created structures on top of the rectangular bases to give it a more reminiscent effect. After that, I worked on the towers and kept it fairly simple. Using tubes and cones, I created basic tower structures to add more to the castle-like appearance. Since there was negative space in front of the castle, I decided to add a fountain made of truncated tubes, and tori.

Materials
For the appearance of the castle, I chose to go with a variety of blue colors accented with white. To do so, I used sapphire, diamond, and aquamarine for the castle. The sapphire was used for the towers while the aquamarine was used on the bases. In addition to the bases, an accent that helped to add a bit more contrast to the castle was diamond. For the fountain, I chose to use a liquid material that was also blue. The reason I chose blue as the main color for the whole castle, was so that it would appear more unified and that blue is my preferred color of choice.
