Clement Lee ATCM 3355: Week 4 Castle

The Concept

I was inspired by the Japanese Yasaka Pagoda for this piece, and I knew I somehow wanted to incorporate the idea of floating roofs or so somewhere inside the piece, and the iconic stem, though I think it'd be too fragile to 3D print.


Processes

I wanted to create a sloping base, so I used some squares and curves and did a 2 rail sweep command to make it as such. I know it is not perfectly symmetrical but I could not fix it, and it does not seem noticeable. 

for the roofs, I made a triangle and used a surface coplanar to fill it as a triangle, extruded and joined it up to make a triangular prism. I used calculation by hand to place the roof pieces, though I reckon there might be a more efficient way to do such.

The pagoda top is made of a series of frustums, and I think I would have to print them separately to get it to work

Materials
I think that having a 3D print of the piece would be optimal for the print, but in the future I might optimize it for creation using a mold.

The Concept

Want to do something that was base on nature, I figured I would create some sore of plant. Your see the roots spreading out on the floor, the stem reaching from the ground, the plants vein that you can see on a leaf, then the small bud that barely forming. Knowing that nature can be widely crazy, but mouth-dropping is what I want to create for this project.

The Process

Starting from the stem, I made around 12 floor to which I round their edges to be softer to give it a more slick look to it. Add the skin, which just a flat surface wrap, and the veins above of the skin layer. The base is two cylinders that where combine into one shape. The roots where made by copying the skin, then cut and unwrap the faces. Rising the edges to create a 3D shape which combine with a elongated box as a plug. Hole where created by using a square curve and MakeHole tool The bud was created with a thin cylinder with a sphere on top. A hole was creating on the top to hole the bud.

The Materials

The materials would simple be the filament to create the shape then to paint it with most matted paints. Following the brown from the roots and base, greens for the stem and veins, and a light yellow for the bud. With this, the Plant Castle Tower is complete with color and the feel of a plant.

Project Brief


Concept



The concept I ran with was derived from the FIFA World Cup trophy. I wanted to play with the settings of the original model and form it into something of my liking. I grew up playing soccer so this only felt right. I wanted to add the ball to the top to really set it off.


Process

We had gone back and forth on Rhino from the main application to Grasshopper for a while adjusting layers until we felt comfortable with our creations. Any one change on Grasshopper had to be transferred over to the main application. We would then bake the transformation. After this is done and you label each layer, you should add color. The process took a while but it was worth it in the end.


Materials

The materials required boiled down to having a computer and the right software. Now the individual 3-D creation has many materials used digitally. Plastic is the most common. I decided to go with a metallic material to sell that it was golden. I think it looks decent.

Final print with adjustments.

Project Brief

                                                                            Concept:

The concept that I was going for in this castle tower project is duality and vulnerability. The two towers intertwined represent the different emotions people feel when they open up to one another. On one hand, there is the tower with the skin on, like a shield protecting its interior from the outside world. However, right next to it is a similar tower with no skin and just the framework of the tower. You can see right through the model and the contrast between the two towers shows how we as people show two sides as well.

Process:

The process for this project was a long one for me as I have never taken a modeling class before of even worked on this type of software. It was quite difficult for me to follow along with the tutorials and figure out Rhino but in the end, I managed to make some sense of it. I designed my tower model by being inspired by my own life experience with being emotionally open and vulnerable. I first built the first tower with the skin on and realized that by making two intertwined towers, I could show contrast and comparison better.

Materials:

The materials I set up in the layers was plaster and metal. I really liked the glass effect however with my colors of cyan blue and green being similar to glass looking material. I think a metal or glass looking finish would create a more sophisticated and professional look to my model. 









Rhett Carlin ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle - Tower

Concept:  The concept I decided to base my castle/tower was of a colosseum-esc city ruined by time and rebuilt over and over. The base design was simple enough, however I wanted an aspect of it to stand out as the focal point which would provide a good introduction to rhino while posing a challenge to better my use of the program. I am lucky enough to have visited the roman colosseum and a large proportion of its history is intertwined with a cultural hierarchy of class. The Spire in the center of my tower is intended to demonstrate a story of class conflict where those in higher echelons increasingly distance themselves from the lower classes until eventually the only way to continue creating distance was to move upwards, physically putting themselves above the common folk.




Processes: The tower began as a number of concentric circles emanating out from the origin divided into 12 sections. I began building the actual structure by extruding a single outside curve Boolean tower, and creating a polar array of the geometry around the circle creating the outside wall. These pillars were then adjusted randomly to mimic the idea of a skyline, and then merged into one piece of geometry. An oblong cylinder turned to its side, polar arrayed, and Boolean differenced 24 times along the base created entranceways to the outside. From here I created a cone with its point pointed in the origin and Boolean differenced the sides of the outside wall to create a framing, and draw the viewers eye towards the middle of the model. The secondary walls built higher followed the same process. The spire in the middle of the model is a sculpted truncated cone with half a sphere placed atop. The colosseum itself was then duplicated, scaled, and transformed to sit atop the sphere. small detail elements were then added to create more character.

Materials: The materials I used to cover the tower was the preset plastic material. I wanted the structure to exude the idea of a clean marble while also looking inauthentic. Plastic often falls into this world of the uncanny valley where its perfect, but strangely, not perfect enough. It feels fake and the over consumption and waste of plastic in our own lives helps demonstrate an idea of materialistic culture being present.

Isaac Oldham ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower

 

I gravitated toward the idea of making a Lego-styled castle. I figured that the simple design of the very early Lego sets would be a good introductory project to get me used to Rhino's controls and its functions while also allowing me the time to focus on finishing up my work both in and out of school. 
I started out with the surrounding walls first as an outline, putting into practice the Boolean command that Rhino offers. Once I was able to figure out how to create the arch-way, I moved onto the corner towers, and duplicated them around the perimeter. For the interior I wanted to make a small elevated courtyard and living space. I first started with the main 4 buildings in the middle, then added 4 more smaller buildings on the corners of the platform. Adding the corner buildings brings out the castles sense of scale. After all of that was constructed, I decided to put all of it on a very simple ground platform. I wanted to make the platform look like a pedestal for the castle and yet still look like it was sitting on a cliff. It started out as just a simple block with a ramp down each side and corners. I then filled in the gaps between the ramps with smaller more distorted shaped ramps to mimic the look of some rocks. I think the combo of the symmetrical ramps and the asymmetrical rocks between them helps me achieve that display piece vibe with a little added world building. 




As for materials; I used the preset Plastic material, with a couple of adjustments to the parameters to see if I could get the light hit it nicely. I also added a rough plastic bump map to give it a little bit of a texture. I used yellow for the main walls, and then a slightly darker yellow for the bricks to make them pop a little more. I used the same darker yellow for the interior platform, and then a bold red for the roofing to give it that late 80's early 90's toy feel.
