Manuel Diaz ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower

 Concept:

For this project, I chose to design my tower to have space observatory characteristics. I wanted to create

a tower that had a bit more purpose rather than a monumental building. The concept of a rotating

satellite at the top in a gear-like motion was what I was aiming for. This would ultimately be an idea for

an observatory with lower-level office spaces with the satellite gathering information at the pinnacle of

the tower.






Process:

I started with the original tower model in order to get a linear base for my observatory. I would imagine

a circular building where people can walk around while having ambient light from outside. Towards the

middle section, I added ridges to the base cylinder to give it more of a mechanical structure that would

be able to rotate the lab. The satellite is meant to move across its railing to give the structure

characteristics of movement.










Materials:

While I would have had this building be designed with more neutral colors, I went with something a bit

more distinguishable. The cyan middle pipes are meant to resemble a glass exterior on the floor’s levels.

The dome has its metallic texture consistently with the inner structure of the building.

Michael Murphy ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower




Concept: 

I was inspired by the tower from the candy kingdom in Adventure Time. It has a design with waterfalls coming out and a large tree on top. I thought about doing this for a castle tower with a tree on top and a couple of smaller towers next to it. The walls separate the distance between the towers.





    

Process: 

I added cylinders and made sure they were tall enough for the towers. Then I made a tree with a         truncated pyramid for the trunk and a cone for the leaves. I used rectangles for the walls. Cones were added on top of the smaller towers after. 






Materials: 

Materials: I didn’t really use any materials, but I wanted to focus on making sure the model was as inspired by the picture as possible while making sure it had a different design.

Dylan Burt ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower

The Concept 

1. Concept
  • For my tower the first thing that came to mind was the tower of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings franchise, however the initial tower design made me think of the triple DNA helix concept. So I knew I wanted sharp edges with a triple spiral design, while having a black and red theme with a joining point at the top.

2. Processes
  • I started by reducing the floor corners to three in grasshopper, raising the height, and reshaping the contour in the graph editor in order to create the triple spiral and a long skinny tower. I then went into rhino and increased the horizontal scale of the floors in order to accentuate spiked corners to create a jagged points going up the tower and add a pyramidal shape at the top of the tower in order to continue the theme of three and sharp edges, and I made a solid skin layer which then was then edited to have a staircase consistency.

3. Materials
  • The materials I had in mind were dark metallic themes for the pipes the triangular tip, and the base, I then went with a red painted skin, and red glass floors as to allow viewing all the way to the bottom, however I had considered making the skin also red glass material. The black and red theme goes really well with the initial inspiration of the tower of Sauron. 
I am satisfied with my design, however I may add more to the base later on in order to add more detail.

Tately Diep ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower

Concept: 

Moon Jellyfish


For this project, as I was playing around in Grasshopper, I ended up with an abstract spiraling tower that reminded me of sea anemones or the oral arms/tentacles of jellyfish. I decided to base my tower off of Moon Jellyfish as I liked the concept of a glowing centerpiece.

The bottom portion of my tower was made through Grasshopper, and then I added the rings on top to somewhat replicate the top of the head of the jellyfish without just using a dome shape. I utilized Boolean Difference and Boolean Union to make the two rings separate pieces detachable from one another as I was keeping in mind how I would assemble this once it was 3D printed.

I tried to utilize interesting materials like lights, glass, and colored metals to make my simple design more visually appealing. I imagined the sphere centerpiece illuminating the tower like how the tops of Moon Jellyfish heads glow. I went with using different shades of blue in the spiraling tubes to add more dimension in the bottom of the tower.

Overall, I am fairly satisfied with how this project came out to be even though it came out more simple than I anticipated. I tried to keep in mind what would seem realistic for me to print, but I would say I would like to be more ambitious in future projects to push the limits of my creativity.

Coleman Toups ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower

 Concept:

I created my castle to evoke the duality of nature vs man by using branches to support the main body of castles structure. Before I began, I knew I wanted the castle to be something that would only exist in the realm of fantasy as the concept of an entire castle resting on a tree is intriguing but implausible.

Process:




I began by creating a cylinders in the center and using the boolean command to cut it into the desired shape to create the bottom base and the rounded front stone wall. The front arches were created from extruded rectangles with the top left and right edges filleted. I desired to create the tree branches in rhino but was unaware that there was a Sub D tool to create organic shapes so instead I used the zbrush tool in blender and imported it as an stl. The bases of the central buildings were extruded from cylinders and on top of these I placed a cube in the center, resized it, chamfered the top edges and filleted the corner edges. The base of the towers are just extruded cylinders and the roofs of these towers have a base cylinder with the top face scaled up and a cone placed on top. The smaller details such as the window, the banner and the front door were created with basic shapes and cut into shape using the boolean command, the chamfer tool and the fillet tool. The posts of the railing around the central tower  were created using polar array on a cube and removing undesired posts. On top of those posts are a extruded cylinder cut into shape by the boolean command.

Materials:

The roofs of the towers and railing posts are a polished yellow material to create the appearance they are made of gold. The rest are presets with the pattern resized to properly fit on the castle. The walls use stone brick pattern. The windows and railing top use walnut brown polished. The top castle base uses "fake grass black" and the bottom base uses gray dirt. The tree branches use the same walnut brown as the railing top, but unpolished. The front banner uses red floral print to give the castle a little personality.






Reina Park ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower

The Concept:



In this project, I attempted to make a castle tower that resembled the Mont Saint-Michelle. I also centered my project around the theme of ice cream! I have always admired the beautiful architecture and surroundings of Mont Saint-Michelle. I was initially having a difficult time choosing the theme of my project but then I suddenly started craving ice cream and I just decided to make my theme ice cream! It ended up coming together much more naturally than I had guessed.




The Process:







I started building my composition in Grasshopper. I first created my own tower definition in Grasshopper, I then went on to make it appear like an ice cream cone. After this, I baked my ice cream cone so that I could utilize the ice cream cone in Rhino. I copied and pasted the original cone so I could make a few variations of ice cream styles for my composition. I went on to create spheres and taurus’s to create the top portion of an ice cream cone. I also made the base portion of the castle by using polygon commands and extrusion commands as well. I decided to create a shape similar to that of a bee as well as another shape resembling a honeycomb, I did this to give the composition more of a desert theme. For the honeycomb, I created a hexagon, then I extruded them, and then I used make hole commands. I also created several pillars as well as walls to give my composition a resemblance to Mont Saint-Michelle.






The Materials:


For the materials I tried to explore the keyshot software so I ended up creating my own material for the top portion of the ice cream. For the new material I made some adjustments from existing material, which was urban concrete. I chose to utilize the existing material, urban concrete, because of its fuzzy nature. For the honeycomb, I used ashwood material but I changed the color to yellow so it would appear more like a honeycomb. For the ice cream cone, I used oakwood rough material. For the walls, I used brick laquered material and decided to adjust the size and color of the bricks. For the top portion of the pillars, I used maple wood satin and for the bottom portion I used pinewood rough material. For the base, I used cloth weave beige and decided to slightly adjust the width and height. Finally, for the sculpture of the bee I used default settings but I changed the wings to a glass-like material. 





Yvonne Yu ATCM 3355 F23: Project 1 Castle-Tower

 Concept:

For my tower, I wanted to create a design inspired by a carousel. I felt that the repetitive nature and movement of the tower created from the grasshopper file was similar to that of a spinning carousel. When creating the horses and the apples, I wanted to convey a simple, toy-like design similar to that of wooden horses or art on children's' toys.

After using the grasshopper file to create the initial shape of my tower, I then went into Rhino to adjust and add-on shapes. For the top of the tower, I extruded and shaped the top floor of the tower into a tent-like shape. I then used various primitives to add dimension as well as create the horses and apples (spheres, cylinders, pipes, ellipsoids, and parabloids). Using BooleanDiff and Boolean Union, I was able to combine my shapes into close solids. I utilized the ArrayCrv command to duplicate the shapes I created and easily add them around my tower. I also used OffsetSrf to turn the "skin" of the tower into a closed polysurface and prevent any naked edges.

In Keyshot, I wanted my rendering to convey a wooden toy feel. I used a Mahogany wood for the top and adjusted the colors to make it a more saturated red. For the floor and corner pipes, I used an Ash wood to contrast the red and adjusted the colors to tone down the rings of the wood. I used Metallic orange for the middle pipes and Oak wood for the horses to make them pop out as they are the focal points. For the apples, I used Paint Matte red which I de saturated to match the Mahogany more, but still stand out. I used Paint Matte white, which I adjusted to be more of a lighter beige, on the "skin" to contrast the wood textures and help bring out all the shapes of the tower.

Overall, I am satisfied with how my tower came out. I was able to create what I had envisioned with my initial concept idea and was able to utilize what I had learned from past projects. If I went back, I would like to experiment with more varied textures/materials in Keyshot or add other shapes/details in Rhino.
