Devon Youngbird: Pepakura

Concept
This venture was my attempt to create a dinosaur to display in my living room. The model itself was going to be based off of an idea of lowpoly triceratops. I would then take this low poly model and use pepakura to create the little dinosaur. Fun fact:I looked at an uncountable amount of triceratops pictures for this project. This ultimately was the first step in creating this little dinosaur.

Technique
I used Maya in order to create the low poly version of this dinosaur, as my skills are more dependable in Maya over Rhino. I used simple extrusions and modeling skills to rough out the shape, taking care to create edge loops to help later in the process. I then exported the model as an .obj to pepakura, and began unfolding it. I followed the tutorial videos to help set things up and create numbers later to be added in an illustrator file, ultimately to be imported into Rhino for engraving. After having the pieces cut out, it was a simple trial of gluing the edges together to create my little dinosuar. 

Material
This material used was white e-flute cardboard. This was used to allow the edges to be perforated and bent to piece together. I plan on finishing the little dinosaur by taping its edges up and adding some sort of color to help it stand out. 

Devon Youngbird: Modular Slots

Concept
These pieces were inspired by the idea of ancient funeral ceremonies. The pieces were meant to mimic the idea of these tall roman metal flag pikes and have skull shapes present to promote this idea of a ceremony. 


Technique
I used a modular cut out idea and used a command to take the edges and contract them in to create engravings inside. I overall used one piece and just used a trim command to create interesting shapes from the single shape. This method was intuitive and created a fast pipeline in order to create many different shape ideas from one piece. 

Materials
The material used was a bendable cardboard. It allows the pieces to bend a little in order to connect with the other cutout sections if you're feeling creative. However, I put the pieces in a box shape to give the idea of a coffin and have an idea of depth. 

Devon Youngbird: Laser Engraving

Concept
This concept was inspired by a video game item- Corvo's mask from the video game Dishonored. Last semester I created a 3D model and rendering of it, so I thought it would be a fun model to return back to and potentially engrave. Using a wire frame perspective gave it more of a blueprint feel, but all in all came out great. 


Technique
I originally created this 3d model inside Maya and exported it out as an .obj file to be used inside of rhino. I used the draw 2d command (being sure to hide hidden lines) and had it project so I could scale it to the dimensions needed for the engraving. I experimented with drawing some additional curves at first, but ultimately decided to remove them in the final piece. 


Materials
For the engraving I used MDF wood board 2'x4' 1/4" thick. I thought it would ultimately serve as a great piece to put in my living room to hang rather than using a cardboard material. I hope to apply some sort of finish to it, so it can really pop instead of the matte finish the board naturally has.

Devon Youngbird: Serial slice

Telephone booth serial splice:



Concept: My concept for my serial splice comes from the idea of a telephone booth. The model itself is came out rather long and I wanted to do something super simple in order to learn the process of serial splicing. I hope to continue on and paint the serial splice to mimic a Tardis or a real world telephone booth.



Technique: For this model I used Maya and imported it into Rhino. In Rhino I used the contour tool to create the slices of the model to layout on the plane for laser cutting. I used a Cplane command to project the planes onto an even surface (0,0) after laying them out, so none of the curves were floating in space. I used a text tool to number each piece so I could know what was what when assembly time arrived.





Material: I knew that the materials for this piece was going to be composed of cardboard- so in keyshot I just slapped on a wood texture/material over the model to represent this. I think it captures the idea of a cardboard telephone booth- I used base color paints too to help envision what it would look like as different solid colors.

Devon Youngbird: Prosthetic Accessory




Project Ent




Concept: The concept for my prosthetic accessory design consisted of using trees as inspiration. I used the roots, vines, and branches of trees to inspire the overall aesthetic approach to this project. I liked the idea of having a 'trunk' as a leg cover for a prosthetic, and you could tie together some symbolic meaning of it all- roots to the ground. 



Technique: I utilized a wide range of techniques for each portion of the prosthetic. I used the pipe command to pipe curves I had projected on to the mesh. A much more effective way over flow curve method. I used network surface to create the base of the model and used a flow surface command to create holes across the model which turned the base into a solid. 






Materials: For materials I used wood materials to help reflect the idea of a organic/natural tree feel. I used separate wood materials to add contrast to the branches/roots over the base. A green plastic was added to the vine layer to add some color to the prosthetic, and I used a carbon fiber material for the foot/leg pole.

Devon Youngbird: USB



Concept: The concept of this USB was the idea of a mouse end USB with peripheral wire running off screen. The overall thing would resemble a real world USB design. Originally, I wanted the wire running all over the screen, but due to curve issues, I decided to simplify the design.


Techniques: This model used a combination of techniques we've learned over the past weeks. From projecting curves, extruding curves, and using tools to draw those curves- to using trim to cutout shapes and filet edges to smooth the model's edges. It was one big review it felt like, but was fun regardless to make.

Materials: The materials are a black matted plastic, a chrome for metal, copper metal in the inner workings, and a red plastic material for the USB logo on top. The materials help reflect the idea of a real world USB extension and rendered nicely.

Devon Youngbird: Detergent Bottle



Concept: The concept for the detergent bottle was the idea of a blue bottle with green ooze beside it. The overall shape was a little boring, so i decided to cut out some holes in the front of the bottle. It's a pretty simple design and shape as far as detergent bottles go.



Techniques: Though the overall concept was simple, the execution was a bit more complex. The shape was heavily reliant on the usage of curves, using trim to help cut out excess lines in the curve silhouette. The 2 rail command is becoming super handy in order to join together 2 curves with a complicated flow. Booleans made an appearance as well and are becoming my favorite commands to use.


Materials: The materials for the bottle are composed of plastics. The cap is an orange plastic and the bottle has a blue plastic. Originally, the blue was lacking roughness to it- so that was the main change to that material, so it wouldn't reflect the entire scene. The green ooze is made up of a emissive material, so it gives a nice glow.
