Chun-Yi Wu: Zodiac Constellation - Leo

Leo is one of the constellations of the zodiac, lying between Cancer to the west and Virgo to the east. Its name is Latin for lion, and to the ancient Greeks represented the Nemean Lion killed by the mythical Greek hero Heracles  as one of his twelve labors.
By the Greek mythology, Leo was identified as the Nemean  Lion, which killed and torn off its skin by Heracles. On mythology Heracles wore Nemean Lion's leather as a armor since the lion was impervious to any weaponry when it was alive.

On my design for Leo this time, no more focus on the character but focus on the part of lion leather cover on a dummy character. Which present as Heracles's lion leather and the Weapon dummy is holding is a symbol of the constellation star of Leo.

After the modeling, again I handing my low resolution model to the rigger David Chiu for set up the rig for Leo

The result just like the image below

For now, the character is on the Pepakura program for laying down, to be continue

Chun-Yi Wu: Zodiac Constellation - Aries

The Second pepakura project I have process is Aries, which present as a female goat. This time I have asked one concept artist to drew me a reference then I'll modeling it in Maya. One of my friend was interest on rigging so I basically asked him to rigged as a try work. Which comes out fine with some poly point fixing.

This project have use the basic animation production process to produce the work flow. which is modeling, rigging, posing and it did helps the quality of the work, but slowing down fore each process of works.

For now what I have done is half of the model printed out

After glue all them up Aries is Half way to the finish product, and one code of the Aqua Gem turns the cardboard like the wooden surface.

Chun-Yi Wu: Zodatic Constellation Pepakura Project- Sagittarius

Continue to my pepakura project the Mermaid I had made from last semester as Aquarius. Then this time is Sagittarius. Which it will be look like a Centaur and its going to be a life size 7.5 feet tall. As what I have said, I'm interest on myth and making these pepakura piece is present as my self in the western culture.  I totally use 13 sheets of 2 x 4 ft card board for this main body piece. Which is the largest one I have done since then.

There's problem comes by which is that its not standing properly . It fall off without support so I have use a wood board glue up with it until making a stand for three foot glue on top.

Charles Person Midterm Laser Cuts

For inspiration for the laser cuts I began to think of representations of atoms, bones and constellations. Specifically the image of larger nodes connected by smaller lines to convey a greater image. So I decided to work with that and create a base node shape that could be interconnected.

The modelling techniques I made use of were curves and curve booleans. I worked with a few base node shapes but kept coming back to the circle as I thought it was the simplest and most effective at conveying what I wanted. In hindsight I'm thinking I maybe should have gone even simpler with my shapes, with maybe just a single node circle shape and a few connector shapes.

For the final assembly I tried drawing influence from a few different constellations but ended up settling on Orion's Belt. I liked the overall simplicity of it as well as how recognizable it is, along with a bit of a personal attachment as it's usually bright enough to be seen as I'm walking to and from night classes despite the light pollution.
