Jason Doze: Week 16 Pepakura

Concept:  I knew I wanted to make a mask that I could hang on the wall and that was pretty large.  I created a female head in Fuse and tweaked the geometry to give the mask huge eyes and tiny little horns.  I wanted the mask to look somewhat alien with prominent eyes and a faint mouth.

Materials:  I used cardboard and taped of the perforations with 1/4" masking tape.  I printed some thicker cardboard to create a backing of the mask to support it and have a place to hang it from.  I first used some hammerite paint to prime and seal the mask and then used ceiling texturet to give it depth and cover the layers of tape underneath.

Technique:  I created the mask in Fuse and tweaked the geometry a bit before importing into maya.  After reducing the geometry in maya, I move to rhino to get the polygon count to exactly 300.  After printing the mask I did and offset curve to create a backing for the mask to print in cardboard.

Concept:  I wanted to create a circular model that was an ovoid that tapered vertically at the top.  After playing around with the model, I choose to have an opening in the lamp also to break both the vertical and horizontal planes.  I imagine having a translucent light shield covering the inside 4" cylinder housing the lamp that would direct the light up and out of the fixture as well as emitting light horizontally. 

Material:  The material I found suitable for this project was all plastic.  I chose clear plastic and blue transparent plastic to make the fixture as believable as possible.  In fabrication, I would choose acrylics and I think a polished aluminum cutout for the front radial "shard."  I used overtly expensive liquitex acid lime, and flat white paint.


Technique:  I made a curve that I like then revolved it and added a surface.  After scaling the model, I scaled out the width to make it oval.  I made a 4" cylinder and brought it near center of the model and then rotated it of center to create the light tunnel and front void of the model using boolean difference.  Next I used section and contour to find my horizontal and vertical curves, made the surfaces and used cut my ribs and massive unroll to layout the parts on the reference bed.

Jason Doze: Week 11 Laser Engraving

Concept:  I used a photograph of a Vesalius drawing I did last summer in figure drawing and then inverted and used a halftone filter.  Then I manipulated a metatron cube and ran both of these in illustrator.  There I image traced the cube and outlined the drawing with a path function.  I set up the Vesalius figure within a six pointed star with the metatron cube in the center.  Next I found a triangle geometric illusion svg, manipulated it and put it on another piece of wood to set atop the previous piece.  

Materials:  I used birchwood and cedar laminated birchwood for the two engravings.  I'm spinning the top layer of wood with a ball bearing fixture and I've used a satin varnish to finish the bottom layer and I have dyed the top layer with orange and pink wood stain. 

Technique: I applied Ultra Dye wood stain with a synthetic paint brush to give the top panel some contrast over the bottom panel.  After applying the stain I sanded the drawn engravings to pull the wood back through.  I used a dremel tool with sanding blade to give the stain a weathered appearance and then clear gloss over the top to give it a protective coating.

Concept:  I didn't have much of a conceptual idea in the beginning so I just began to play around with shapes with the intention to end up with a sculpture that I like.  After trying several iterations, I decided to go with a clean and simple design of three counter balanced spheres.  I wanted them to overlap and have the largest sphere on the top and the smallest on the bottom. 


Materials:  I played around with material for a few days before deciding what I liked best.  I chose wood for my materials because it seemed the most realistic representation of wood being sliced and pressed one atop the other with a series of spheres cut out and veneered with a contrasting color of wood.  I would not typically choose wood for my material but for this particular project it seemed to be the most plausible.   For fun I made another few versions one with glass cubes another with wavy glass I added soft and sharp radial emissive lights to give the model an other worldly look.  The background for the black model is the Los Angeles noon summer solstice background.


Technique:  I made the spheres with solids and created an array of spheres with opposing angles so I could boolean them out of the model.  Then I used boolean union to combine the individual shapes into one model.  I made the cylinders to cut the .25" dow rod holes.  Using contour, and extrude crv I sliced the model horizontally and vertically, then made the reference rectangle, and moved each slice and numbered them with text.
