Eric Lam Week 1 - Castle


Concept: This castle was inspired by fictional space stations. I found that I liked to use the boolean difference method to create curved cones. Also included rings because some science fiction books use them to create artificial gravity.


Modeling Techniques: For the rings I used the torus tool. The multiple spindles on the rings were created by using the rotation tool. The indentations and tall spires are created with the boolean difference method.


Materials: For the materials, I chose to use mostly metals due to the fact that it is inspired by space stations. The little pipes surrounding the main body is created with a gem material because it looks like glass.

Eric Lam Week 2 - Flashlight


Concept: This flashlight was inspired by sample images of flashlights with multiple bulbs. I added some fins as a heat sink in hopes of adding to realism. The block like head was also inspired by another design.


Modeling Techniques: For the fins I used the move/ alt tap we learned in class to make multiple fins. for the bulb reflectors I used rotate with copy = on to create four identical reflectors. the head was also created using this method.


Materials: For the materials, I chose to use mainly metal to create a solid looking flashlight. Didn't feel like using plastic because it would make the fins useless. Used a light blue to accent the plastic looking button.

Rafael Garcia Flashlight

Concept- I immediately thought of something from my childhood during the tutorial. I wanted to recreate it, so I did!  Carnivals and circuses embedded this type of flashlight in my head as a child. 


Technique: I used the steps I learned in the tutorial to continue making cylinders line up and the switch match perfectly with what I had in mind.
Materials: The emissive materials allowed for the inner lighting effect to be seen.


Alec McKay Week 2: Duck


Concept: This duck was inspired by novelty rubber ducks. The devil duck looked like a fun one to do. I also added some details based on what I found online.


Modeling Techniques: For the wings and the facial features, I used a lot of mirroring across the X axis. I also moved the control points for a sphere to create the body, head and wings. The blend tool is what I used to build the neck between the head and the body.


Materials: As it is a rubber duck, I used rubber for almost all of the materials.  The body is red rather than yellow, since this duck is the devil. The eyes and the horns are made of a shiny plastic, because I thought they would look nicer with a gleam.

Rafael Garcia Castle


Concept: Abstraction is a heavy theme in my favorite art aesthetic. For this reason I chose to make a weird throne-esque type castle.

Technique: I used the ExtrudeCrv command to make the floating walls around the throne and worked my way inward. The gem shapes were made by combining the solid function and the twist function. The stairs up to the throne were made easily through the copy pasting and editing of x,y,z values. The triangles were made by arraying the extruded curves made via the freeform line tool.

Materials: I found an interesting effect that made the 3D aspects pop by making some look 2D (the pink, yellow, white and blue toon mats.) Gold stairs lead up to a silver liquid throne with floating gems. 

The first idea I had was an all emerald throne, like something out of the wizard of Oz.

Alec McKay Week 2 - Flashlight


Concept: My flashlight has a rubber grip, which I found in many flashlights online. There’s also grooves cut for the fingers to rest in. Many flashlights also have a plastic ring around the head of the flashlight, so I included that as well. 



Modeling Techniques: To cut the grooves out of the head, I used a polar array to surround it with cylinders and then used Difference to cut out the holes. For the finger grips, I used a linear array. Then I cut those out with Difference as well. 


Materials: My flashlight is made mostly of hard plastic. I chose bright colors that would be seen more easily in dim light. The grip is made of rubber, since that would feel better on the fingers. I also have a piece on the inside of the flashlight made of a light emitter material so that the flashlight looks lit.

Alec McKay Week 1 - Castle


Concept: Castles with pointed towers inspired my castle model. Many fantasy castles are built on a mountain and the towers have a similar rise towards a peak in the center. The outer wall was inspired by force fields in science fiction.


Modeling Techniques: The spires on the central tower and the three outer towers were all created with polar arrays around the origin. I also used polar arrays around each of the outer towers to create borders on them. To create the force field, I rotated a torus and used a polar array to arrange three of them around the castle.


Materials: I wanted the castle to look intimidating, so I went for a black and red color scheme. In keeping with the sci-fi part of my castle, I decided to have the castle be made of metal. For lighting, I chose an environment that would show off the shine of the metal, and increased the contrast.
