Griffin Korns: Week 11 Laser Engraving

Concept:
I originally wanted to do a raster engraving of the black/white image featured above, but due to some unforeseen issues with formatting, I decided to make it a crosshatched engraving instead, as I knew it could be done without issue. The car featured is a 2016 Mustang GT350 R.



Technique:
I took a wallpaper of mine and modified it in Photoshop to be black and white, and so that the shadows were extremely contrasting, and any excess color or lighter shadows were gone. I then took that image into Illustrator and drew curves around all of the different "tiers" of shadows, which made 4. I then took those curves into Rhino, and split planes with them, organizing each plane by shadow tier. Then I used the contour command to crosshatch each plane according to its shadow tier. I added an additional hatch for each tier of shadow, with the 4th tier having 4 hatches, and being darkest.


Materials:
I used a piece of regular plywood from Lowe's, and some glue to secure the feet of the stand.


Griffin Korns: Week 12 Waffle Lamp

Concept:
I wanted to make a simple, easy to put together lamp that sort of mimicked a globe, and could stand on its own.



Technique:
I created a series of circular curves, then lofted them to create the outer shape, then used the Cap command to seal it off. I duplicated the model and manipulated it to get the interior cavity shape that I wanted, then used BooleanDifference to hollow it out. I followed the tutorial video with the pipes to create the sliced model.








Materials:
The model is made out of 2 ply cardboard, along with a regular light bulb and a Bottle Lamp kit from Lowe's.I also created a mounting piece for the light bulb with some scrap cardboard, and cut it so it notches into the top of the lamp.



Sarah Roberson: Laser Engrave

Concept:

For my concept for the laser engrave, I decided to recreate the Settlers of Catan tiles with my own designs. This sticks with my theme of doing board games but allowed me the chance to be able to re-create the board using my own designs. 

I really had fun with this project because I got to create my own designs rather than use the originals. It also gave me the chance to explore using other softwares besides Rhino to come up with my designs.



Modeling Techniques:

The modeling for my designs were pretty straight forward. Because I wanted to draw my own designs, I created everything mostly in Adobe Illustrator. The only thing that I didn't create in Illustrator was the hexagons for the main shape of the pieces. I used this as a way to make them as precisely as I could because I eventually hope to make this into a full sized board.

I then imported the hexagons into Illustrator to draw on top. I used the brush tool to create the strokes and the overall design. I was really happy with the way everything turned out because everything was done by my own hand. Even the textual elements to each piece was my own handwriting.





Material Choices:
For the materials I ended up using for the actual engrave was a 12x12 sheet of plywood provided by a friend who had extra wood lying around his house. I used the 12x12 dimensions to center it on my canvas and then used an 8x10 square to scale the engraving to the appropriate size for the project requirements. I finished the piece by spraying a clear sealant over the whole thing. Before I sealed it, I painted on black, watered down acrylic paint to bring out some of my design which would be lost if it wasn't for the black coloration the paint gave it.

As stated before, I plan on making an actual working board so that we can play the board game on a custom board. This will be made by duplicating the designs onto more pieces and then using the same wood engrave and cut the pieces out.

Griffin Korns & Michael Creamer: Week 16 Pepakura




Concept:
The design is a low poly model of a hammerhead shark, the intent behind creating it being to replicate an organic and fluid form with straight edges. It was also intended to be able to stand on its own, similar to a tripod.


Technique:
The shark was originally modeled in Maya, then brought into Pepakura to be tweaked until it was foldable. It was brought back into Maya to be split up and modified several times to fix any issues with folding.




Materials:
The shark was made of eflute cardboard, then folded and stuck together with tape and various glues. It was sprayed with textured spraypaint to make the surface more dynamic and visually interesting, as well as to add depth.


Simon Fields: Week 11 Laser Engraving





Concept: This piece I have done for the laser engraving is a fanart based off of a Reverse AU of the old cartoon show Ed, Edd, n Eddy. Kevin, who normally is considered the jock in the show is a totally nerd in this AU. I love this character because he's adorkable and cute! This drawing fits into the cute aesthetic that I like to go for at times!

Technique: I hand drew the little chibi and scanned it to my laptop. From there I colored him digitally. For the the engraving however I too out the color to make a raster layer for the engraving. I then took the drawing into Illustrator to better sort out the cut layers so that everything will cut correctly.

Materials: I used MDF Fiberwood for the engraving to be placed upon. I then used STAIN + POLY to stain the wood to a slightly darker hue to create more contrast. I used Acrylic paint to carefully color back in its original design as closely as possible. I am very happy with the results and I hope to do more in the future.

Simon Fields: Week 12 Waffle Lamp













Concept: For the Heart lamp I also went along the similar idea to the serial Slices in doing a heat shaped structure. I wanted to use this shape because I used the serial slice as a stand for this lamp. I used simple and cute colors with the serial Slices so they could match.

Techniques: I used the same curve for the serial slice for the lamp to create it's base shape. I then extruded it into a solid surface. I then followed Prof Scott's video to use the surface command to section off the heart layers and created it's slots on the  in between. I also used the massive unroll script to unfold the model to lay the pieces down for laser cutting.

 Materials: In keyshot I used metallics type paints so I can show off multiple hues in the colors. I wanted the scheme to match the serial slice base so I choose pink and blue! For the laser cutting material I used to a thin cardboard. And I sealed it with spray and then proceeded to paint them pink and blue similarly to the keyshot renders. Then I got a small little LED light to put inside the waffle structure. There's such a wide opening because I want to be able to use different types of bulbs and light fixtures for that piece.

Simon Fields, Lisa Marie: Week 14-16 Pepakura













Concept: For this assignment I used the same model I used for my 3D print assignment for the pepakura. I really liked how my 3D print had looked so I really want to see how you would look on a larger scale at a lower polycount. My partner agreed to use the model so we are all set to go.

Techniques: I reduced the polycount to 300. My partner Lisa unwrapped the model in the pepakura software for me to finish formatting in Rhino. From there my partner put the model together for me.

Materials: we had use masking tape to tape up the edges of the model so it can be ready for sealing. I take it outside to seal it and added a base primer paint to start with. I then proceeded to block out the colors that I was going to use for further detail. I didn't hand-painted all the details to the model and to finish it off added some tape and got styrofoam for his eyes.
