Chess Piece - Final Project
Brian Uretsky and Stefan Babick
The first thing we wanted to do was to choose which chess piece to re-create. We considered making a Pawn, Knight, or Rook, but eventually settled on the Queen.
We started by getting some inspiration from existing chess pieces. Below is a photo of your standard Queen piece.
We worked though Maya and, after a lot of trial and error, came up with the piece below.
We wanted to make something nobody has made before. We also wanted it to be a futuristic take on the familiar chess piece. The Queen's head resembles the tail of Serenity in the TV show Firefly.
Below is a screenshot of the model imported into Rhino.
After verifying the model's integrity, we ported it over to Pepakura and began our work splitting the design.
We ended up with the cut sheet below. It took a lot of reloading and cleaning, but we managed to get it down to seven sheets of cardboard.
The laser cut went very well. The folds were somewhat easy to bend.
Standing over four feet tall, the piece took over 5 hours to make. If we could change anything about the project, it would be to make it bigger.
