When Derek and I got together to plan what we wanted to make for our Pepakura model, we decided that each of us would come up with 2 models. Afterwards, we would choose the best design for our sculpture. Derek really likes the work of Brancusi and I am a big fan of Barbara Hepworth,We got the inspiration from both artists to create our sculpture.
After we decided on the best model out of our 4 pieces we sent it back and forth between us. We were trying to improve and refine the different art designs which we then integrated into our sculpture. We used many different tools from Rhino to create our design,Maya to make sure of a low polygon count and refine polygons. We hit a little snag at first, because, I thought that we needed to have a model with 300 polygons or more. We initially had our model ready with 1800 polygons, so, back to the drawing board to fix our model.
After many hours of working on our model we both agreed that it was ready for production and started on the road to get ready for Pepakura. We exported our design as an OBJ file and loaded up into the Pepakura Designer to create the flat sheet to build our 3d art. We took the cut pieces back into rhino, then used Grasshopper script to create dash and dotted lines for the folds on our model.
It took about about 7 hours for us to put our model together, and 2 hours to paint it, We used a combination of colors to give depth and texture.
