Sarah Bergs : Box Maker

Concept:

I play a lot of tabletop games, and often we joke that dice that behave "badly" (rolling low when we need them to roll higher values) should be put in a "Dice Jail", basically time-out. It doesn't mean anything but it's a running joke that touches on dice superstition at the same time. Considering a long-term game that I was in for a little over two years ended earlier this year, I thought it would be interesting to make a Dice Jail that had references to the game in its design.

The hawk is a reference to the Familiar my character had, the patterning on the sides are like the runes he would draw for magic, and the mountains on the back are tied to mountains that the character got stranded in and had to navigate by himself. The d20 above the hawk is fairly self explanatory, considering for D&D, a 20-sided die is the main die used for rolls.

Process:

At first I used a box design that had a lid, however with numerous issues stemming from that design, I changed out the box and used something more simple that worked. Looking for clipart and simple designs, I converted the jpgs/pngs into pdfs to bring into Rhino as reference images for outlining. This helped keep things consistent and made it much easier than plainly trying to draw the shapes and spending time sorting that out. I put the hawk and d20 on the "front" of the box, mountain range on the back, and the runic pattern on the sides.

Materials:

If this were to actually be made, it would be out of thin plywood so it'd be light, yet sturdy enough to not warp and fall apart. Since there's no mechanical hinges and it slides together with the teeth, it could pull apart for easy transport or storage and put back together for play.
