Inspiration and Influences
I just followed the tutorial, because I couldn't think of anything.

Modeling techniques
I used the boolean command to combine the different pieces and to cut some out. I also used the  project command to make a curve and then used pipe tool to make piece to use to cut out with the boolean command and then I fillet all the edges.

Material and lighting
The head and neck of the hammer use a metal material and the handle uses a soft rubbery material and the cuts into the handle use a clear plastic material.
