Shelandy Ting and Christopher Chambers: Chess Piece

The theme of this group project is to make a piece in the chess board game.  We agreed on the theme of  implementing the rook.  Chris got some initial inspiration form the Minimum game which also uses low poly expression for visualizing its game objects. 


Based on the image of the tower that people have been familiar to the impression of rook, we decide to have some modern interpretation of those meanings behind the image of rook people often associate with, such as stability, zigzag shape of the battlement. 

We use Rhino to construct the solids and use Boolean difference to cut out the negative space we want, use command "arraypolar" to place them into four corners "and then manipulate the corners of the top by manually editing the control points.



After that, we use Pepakura to unfold the 3D models into 2D surfaces with gluing tab.  Most of tabs are sized 15mm, but few of surfaces are tiny so we adjust their tab heights into 10mm.


The default cutting of Pepakura will generate some strange results.  It takes quite some manual effort to maker it right, by adding some pre-defined cutting line to assist Pepakura to make the right decisionAfter the cleaning up and the editing of the layout, we end up with two 24"x48" sheets to print.


I choose using White Marble to render the bird view in Keyshot, as shown below



and I use Reflective Red Glass to render the worm eye view

Christopher Chambers: Project 6 Lamp

For this project I decided to try something different, compared to the last few I have submitted.

Instead of creating an object that mimics that which it portrays directly as I had with the hammer and anvil, I decided to opt for something 'verbatum' and more inherently representative.

The decision of content was a tough one, but having a light fixture that is in need of a lamp-shade already available I decided to go that particular route - which in turn brought me to lamp-shade-like shapes, which in turn lead me to a decision that only someone such as myself would likely make:

To make an engine cowling as found on a radial-engine fighter aircraft. However, as stated above, I chose a more allegorical route than one of direct-representation - and, in turn, decided to combine visual features of two very distinct enemies...

The USSR's Lavochkin La-5FN, and the Third Reich's Fw-190A-8.

These fighters (respectively, in the models represented) were constant adversaries over the Eastern Front, both later models in the earlier lineages of their respective lines of development.

Elements chosen from each were the most distinct - the straight-line cowling, radiator slots, and recessed fuselage gun mountings of the Fw190A-8 as well as its turbine-esque cooling duct were used, while from the La-5FN I opted to incorporate its recessed radiator exhaust ports and propeller cone, though (per its usage as a lamp) I'd included the 190 cone's fitting for a 'motorkanone' - the hole through the top.

The result, in turn, was this.

Formatted for laser-cutting, per its size, it takes up roughly one and two thirds 24x48 inch sheets. The object stands 13 3/4 inches tall, 11 inches around in its widest diameter.

The lighting on this lamp shines primarily upwards, mimicing the cannon fire of the respective aircraft, both of which bore centrally fitted armament. Half of the lamp shows light easily while the other fights the light, accomplished through the placement of the radiator exhaust ports. This both prevents glare on devices in the room its intended for as well as underscores the aformentioned rivalry, light fighting shadow far less fatally than the pilots of these dueling aircraft.

Here is the finished, laser cutter-produced product. The lamp's base was alas not designed to support its weight without tilting precariously, a lesson learned for future iterations!

Christopher Chambers: Week 10 Waffles


Containing startlingly less waffles than the title might suggest, I've opted to generate a continuation of the project before last. Thenabouts, if you recall, I created hammers...

So this time, I'd wanted to continue the set by making an anvil.

Having worked (to the detriment - and subsequent aid - of my tinnitus) on one of these hardy, iron rests before, I felt rather confident in creating this three-dimensional facsimile. I'd felt the shape was incredibly scalable for its geometry, opting to go with a 15 inch length for this particular exercise.

I opted to generate it via Boolean unions and differences, utilizing rectangular prisms, truncated cones, and cylinders until reaching this result. The material chosen is .19 inches (~5mm) thick, as shown to the left below.




Per the previous contentions regarding the laser cutter's timetables, I opted to use a 24x24 inch space, though might change this per feedback.

Decided to have a bit of fun with the Keyshot renders, if only to show off some of the versatility of the shape per positioning. 

The first two renders are set in a position that would doubtlessly harm the traffic in and out of one of the two rooms on the first floor of the ATEC building, in a space that would very well accomodate a sculpture otherwise.

Christopher Chambers - Project 4: Slots


For this assignment I chose to emulate the shapes of 17th-18th century Citadel fortresses, such as the well-known Casale Monferrato and Citadelle de Qu­ébec.

Christopher Chambers - Project 3: Serial Slicing


For the first Serial Slice assignment, I decided to create some hand-sized hammers, of the sledge variety. Image courtesy of the GNU Free Documentation License.




The plan's to slot hard material over the inverted slots on the hammers' heads to make some simple, functional (if decorative) hammers. Given the scale wanted for structural rigidity, I had plenty of room to fit two!


As for cost... Definitely not feasible to print, for this size. Slicing would certainly be more cost effective, especially given that this is the price for one!

Christopher Chambers - Project 2: Flashlight

I was going more for lightsaber and fell short at screwdriver, but it works!

Functional!

Christopher Chambers - Project 1: Submarine

First time touching Maya in 5 years or so, making for quite an experience! Wound up working with polygons as creating what I'd planned to in NURBs proved to be immensely difficult.



For a while I've been wanting to make little 'plug-together' miniatures for 3D printing, opted to go with a submarine for the first try. A lot've influence came from both Total Annihilation and Planetary Annihilation, as their silhouetting-based style is pretty neat. Started with a shape and went from there, mostly via extrusion, until it looked roughly like what I'd had in my head. It's a water-jet based boat, hence the lack of fins! The bits hanging off of the sides are supposed to be a cover for the open bay.

Update!

Ran the Shapeways checks and it seems there's a single spot on the model that wound up giving a 'Thin Walls' notification, due to a portion that tapers, as seen here:


I had, interestingly, also found that Shapeways has a lot easier a time running checks for non-plastics than plastics (or at least displaying them), as seen here:

I believe I've fixed the problem but I need to double-check the scaling in Rhino whenever I next find myself on campus.

As it turns, the model I'd initially uploaded did pass for most of the plastics!


As in the previous update, the 'thin walls' section just wasn't loading properly, as they were apparently doing server work at the time.




I also wound up ordering it, as at present my Solidoodle 2 needs quite a bit of work to get into running order again, and I figured it best not to risk something else breaking in the interim!
