Andrew Kelly: Project 7: Geometric Unfolding

This shape is the union of a cube and a diamond-like octahedron.
This is layout was done entirely in rhino - illustrator is my mortal enemy apparently, and I figured out a way to get a roughly equivalent  result - the lines are 50/50 space/line for mountain folds an 35/65 space/line for valley folds. This object is going to be very pleasant to the touch.

Andrew Kelly: Project 6: Architectonic Lamp

Thematic Description
     I wanted to make a device that would fit in with my home's current aesthetic - a little strange, a little spartan, with interesting shadows, and I wanted to see what types of things rhino would get out of lofting different N-gons.

Build Notes
    I made it a half-sheet for some reason I can't remember (material warping maybe?) and the lamp layout was as you see below:



However, I failed to account for the height of the bulb in the design, and once I assembled the lamp the bulb basically half-emerged from the top. By a thrilling turn of chance, I had decided to get a full sheet cut, giving me two lamps but with only a single light kit; the lamps' vertical ribs lined up!

I am intensely happy about this accidentally wonderful lamp - I'm thinking about getting some vaguely-opaque, non-flammable sheet material and rolling it into a tube, and inserting it, so the bulb gives a more diffused, uniform light. Tested with a paper-towel for reference: 

Andrew Kelly: Project 5: Waffle

Thematic Description
For my waffle assignment I wanted to make something that could be a monument at the right scale, but with movable parts, since all the projects to this point have either been single-piece or a system of just theoretically connected pieces. The idea of a ball-socket joint seems like the simplest abstraction of a system complicated enough to make the misaligned waffles I desire.

I was inspired by a number of pictures on reddit.com/r/infrastructureporn (beautiful photos of infrastructure from 'round the world), as well as this piece: (original artist = Johnathan Solter)
specifically the with the pyramid at the bottom and the spherical mass of energy near the top.


Rhino captures
 Something strange was happening with the display, couldn't get my rhino to handle transparency properly, shaded, wireframe, or ghosted, but instead the entire object gets rendered with the faces more parallel to the camera being more visible.

Andrew Kelly: Project 4: Slots

Thematic Description
For this project I wanted to make something sharp - no obtuse angles or rounded curves. I want the slotted parts to be used to make structures that prick the sleepy builder.

And here is my laid-out sheet of duplicates. I started with an array that was too dense, then moved parts around to get the most out of my material. Even so, there a few small spaces that could have been filled if the material was just one inch larger.

Andrew Kelly: Project 3: Serial Slices

Thematic Description
     For this project I wanted to make a more complex shape in rhino to explore more organic curve modeling methods, including different functions to connect and extrude surfaces. With the bounty of autumn upon us, I was inspired by the falling leaves and the balding trees, and I wanted to make a totem to them

Andrew Kelly: Project 2: Flashlight Sleeve

Week one progress
Here's my flashlight sleeve. I'm still getting a hang of rhino, experimenting with the different tools without any concrete final idea in mind. Input appreciated!

Thematic description
For this project I decided to see if I could carry elements of my previous project over to rhino, as a test of sorts for myself. I also wanted a flashlight sleeve that would be more of a light fixture than a portable utility, so I wasn't worried about comfort in hand or pocket, but I definitely wanted to be able to set the object on the table, turn it on, and be able to enjoy the shadow patterns. The pulsing center stock of the sleeve is a similar profile to the pulse on the loops of my first project, and the rods protruding from the top will hopefully cast strong shadows, so as to be visible even when the light is far from walls  or other objects.

Modeling Techniques
     For this project I utilized surface-based curve-modeling techniques in Rhino, using revolve, loft, sweep, booleans (union/subtraction) and lattice-deformers to make a pleasing model out of simple primitives.

Andrew Kelly: Project 1: Karmic Decay

Following are two views of my finished project, and the verification from shapeways. (one ring on the front flat surface is missing in the maya renders - the final iteration of the file, which differed only on that one point, got corrupted):

Week one progress
I'm pleased with how it's turning out, but I feel like the sense of motion I desired initially is lacking. I wanted to portray an ebbing flow through a system, with the flow passing through the largest circular piece, partially recycled by the exterior tubes and partially lost by the reaching front tubes.

The grid spacing is 1", putting the figure at about 4 inches across, with completely clean geometry and correct normals.

Critiques, comments, or advice on how to better portray motion on a static model are appreciated!

Thematic description
     I wanted to make a piece that would symbolize my own energy. I wanted it to remind me of an important dream I had a few weeks prior to the assignment of the project, in which I was the center of a decaying cycle. I had to continue to exert myself in waves to keep the flow in equilibrium, to resist losing myself to my environment. With this dream of flow and balance in mind, this model was made and refined over the course of the project. The catalyzing ring and the loops of energy that loose mass in the loose ends but are replenished by the ring as they near a full cycle.

Modeling Techniques
     For this project I utilized surface-based poly-modeling techniques in Maya, manipulating loops, rings, extrusions, 'bridges,' (similar/identical to lofting, but for polys) as well as a good deal of point movement and merging to get the edge flow to be as clean as it is with so many intersecting tubes and cylinders.
