Carson Jones - Project 3 - MakerCase Lamp

Concept/Inspiration:

I wanted to make a lamp for a good friend of mine who really likes Genshin Impact. The starting area is Mondstadt, the City of Wind and Song, so I based my design off of the main element of the region, wind. Windmills, flowers, the wind itself, clouds, and more were some starting thoughts for me. I ended up making the left and right side functionally the same because I wanted there to be a clear front and back to the lamp. The symbol for wind in the game is what I decided to use for the two sides.

Process:

At first, I planned on making a bunch of engravings and painting parts of the lamp. But I quickly realized that without many inner cuts, not a lot of light would come out. So I decided to try and cut out a bit more than I originally planned. I added some details to the inside of the windmill, as well as make the wind currents on the top and bottom of each side inner cuts.

In Rhino, I imported the box from Makercase and then started to draw my curves with Control Point Curves and Polyline. I then used Join to make the lines into their respective parts, and used Hatch to create a space for the rastor engravings. For the 3D model, I used ExtrudeCrv to start with, then used Sphere and Cylinder to create the lightbulb and the socket. For the wire, I simply used Pipe on a curve.

Materials:
In Keyshot, I used wood grain and then altered the color to be lighter. For the painted sections I used paint, for the wire I used rubber, and for the lightbulb I just used glass and a point light. Lighting was fairly simple, I just tried to make the lamp look like it was resting on the counter.
I had 1/4 inch MDF board that I bought from Home Depot. I painted the green and white sections their respective colors with a thin brush, although my shaky hands caused some paint to go where it shouldn't. I used some printer paper I had on me for the inside of the lamp.
