Madeline Askins - Project 3 Maker Case Lamp

 Concept/Inspiration:

My inspiration for this project is family beach photos. There isn't a specific media this is from, just the general concept of taking photo's on the beach with your family. Since it was recently my mother's birthday I decided to make it themed around a mom and daughter. I represent beach photos by having the figures back to the viewer and the light shining from in front. I found a few paintings that show this style of art. Each side represents the daughter growing up and spending her life with her mother before she departs. Most of my family photos offer the element of growing up and departing. That is why I chose that story.

Process:

For my lamp, I decided to have most of it cut out rather than raster and engraving details. I would leave the figure of the mom and daughter visible by not cutting into them but rather cutting out the environment around them. This also gives the idea of the sunlight beaming around them in an environment. I would add a blurred painted paper within the lamp to show that they are at the beach. With all the details I just traced a line around the sketch and filled it in to get the figure. I then joined all of the lines together to connect everything within a whole model. This made sure nothing got chopped or cut off. For the clouds, I created circles and placed them over each other. I then used the cutting tool to cut off the lines centrally leaving only an outline of the circles. Once I joined the circles it looked like a cloud.

Materials:

For my materials, I decided to use an MDF board. The outside looks like cardboard but I planned on painting it. Once the board was cut I glued it together with Loctite and let it dry. Then I used high gloss black spray paint and painted it. I wanted the lamp to be shiny so the figures in the lamp appeared to have outlines. Then I took tracing paper and painted watercolor shades onto it. The tracing paper and watercolor are very light so they wouldn't block too much light.
