For our 2nd Project, we were given the choice to design and create a 3D model of our choice.
Personally, music is a huge part of my life. Without it, I don't know where I would be.
Inspired by one of the biggest music scenes in the UK, Ministry of Sound, I decided to use their logo as inspiration and create a "world" model, with a crown on top. This symbolizes the fact that music is worldwide, and is listened to around the globe.
I started with a sphere, thinking it would work best to chip away and subtract pieces.
It was tricky getting the grid-style cutaway to look similar, but after tinkering I took my best shot.
Created in Rhino, I used BooleanDifference to create a "waffle" look for the piece. I then created the crown from a curve, and extruded it to give it thickness. Finally, I attached the crown to the main piece with two small columns.
The finalized 3D print came out awesome. It was much bigger in person than I had imagined, which in turn used more 3D printing material than originally envisioned. Looking back, I would have changed my design to more of a "hollow body", eliminating lots of the needed material and making the sculpture overall lighter.
