Brian Hou & Victoria Tran: Week 12 3D Scan

The Golden Fox

I choose this clay fox I had made 7 years ago because it symbolized fertility and wealth in Japan as well as in China. The fox's traits make it a symbol of diplomacy and wildness; or the act of pursuing freedom while dealing with people in caring and sensitive ways.

The model started as a piece of clay and was hand-molded, put in a kiln, then hand-painted. When we scanned the object, we did not need to add any dots or cover it in white powder because the painted features gave us enough information to align the meshes. The scanning process took roughly an hour and required 2 scans. First, we had it sit in it's usual upright position, then we flipped it 90 degrees to where the nose was touching the base and the tail was touching the anchor/prong holder on the rotating base. The second scan was used to get more digital information about the bottom of the fox and the base he is standing on. After scanning it, Victoria put it into RapidWorks and fixed the holes in the Mesh.

In Keyshot, we decided to use solid 24K gold because of what the fox symbolizes: wealth and fertility. It is very possible that people in Asia have solid gold fox ornaments in their homes for good luck.
