Concept
I approached this assignment with a very straightforward mentality. I wanted to make an object, using slots, that people in Texas would be well aware of. I decided to make an oil derrick. The concept was simple and I was diving into a new area so I wanted to make sure I didn't get ahead of myself and start creating very complex stuff. I figured that an oil derrick would give me the right ideas for shapes, and it would also give me a nice puzzle to piece together once it's been printed.
Modeling Techniques
I actually modeled the pieces, piece by piece. I didn't draw them using curves. I wanted to make sure that my pieces would stack and work. I used simple shapes like cylinders and rectangles and molded them together using Boolean differences and unions. In taking this approach it allowed me to see my end game before I printed everything. Now once I had the object modeled out, I then laid each piece down and drew the curves on top of each piece of geometry in order to insure that my prints would be the same exact size. I also printed more than I made because I didn't know how my smaller pieces would fair while being printed.
Use of Materials
I used cardboard because it would give me flexibility in case some notches were cut too large for the pieces to stick together. I chose against using a type of wood due to this limitation. I feel that if I perfected the technique that there would be no doubt in my mind that I would choose to use wood. Wood gives for a much cleaner feel and look.
