For our chess piece, we had two design goals - first, to make a pawn. Pawns are likely to be under-represented in a project like this, and they present an interesting challenge to make a piece that feels low-rank.
Second, we wanted to move away from a traditional chess-piece mentality, and loosen up the design constraints. Our piece would feel at home on a chess board, but wouldn't necessarily be immediately recognizable as a chess piece.

After all the prep work in Pepakura, Illustrator, and Rhino, we get a cutsheet that requires six sheets of material at 24" x 48":
And it's off to the laser cutter and assembly time!
