Muhammad Martinez: Week 11 - Laser Engraving

Laser cut file / design

Concept:
I thought about using a map while on a flight earlier in the semester. We flew over amazing peaks and valleys with structure well-defined from even thousands of miles up. I wanted to capture this depth in the laser engraving design,

Technique:
Some of my favorite google earth locations were impractical for this project because they had too much finite detail which is the first thing to get muddied up by the laser cutter. I chose this location because it had a natural contrast that could be easily highlighted. The snapshot was later expanded to include San Francisco and outlines of the Bay Area also in part of that reason.

After a few rounds of narrowing down filters and a quick test cut, I ended up blending a silhouette like filter Photoshop's plaster filter which gives better control when drawing grayscales.

 After polyurethane treatment

Materials:
The deck is made of Canadian Maple wood and the test piece simply Maple.
