Ways To Work Between 3D Program and Pepakura Program

Originally we build the 3D model and send it out to Pepakura program for flat down the 3D model so we can export out to Rhinoceros 5 for laser cutting process. But since we got a Plotter we can totally send it out directly from Pepakura to Plotter  for printout. Question is "How" we set up the UV properly and import the texture in to Pepakura.
In Pepakura, we have ability to layout the UV, which is the same way we lay out the piece as we sliced them in to the table. But first thing is make sure the Table is "Square Size!" This is very important, neither way of the  size of table or the size of the 3D model, but the table must stay on square size. Also you may turn off the flaps so there are are more spaces you can use to fit in the table the way you can figure out that which piece is which
Ex:

Once its has been layout, File>>Export>>Texture Editing>>Map Image for Texture,
by this process you will be export out a .bmp file and the program will reset the default UV to what we have layout as on top of the image.
After reset the Model UV by export the bmp file, we can export the OBJ file from Pepakura
This obj file is going to drop in to Mudbox, which is what I use, for editing the texture from 3D surface. (At here I'm not going to teach how to work on Mudbox since so much totural video on YouTube.)
File>>Export>>Texture Editing>> 3D Model with UV Info

As an ATEC student who have taking the Modeling class, Autodesk Mudbox is one of the suggest program to use for student. I only texture the upper body of the model so what happened to the texture is become like this
The lower body is not texture so nothing is under the texture file.
The Pepakura3 do not have ability to import the texture over 1024px but the newer version Pepakura4 have ability to take the 4096px, so suggest to download Pepakura4 for the high quality resolution.
The way to import the image to Pepakura is very basic, Setting>>Texture Setting>>Specific Texture Image>>select the image
Then go to Other>>Texture On/Off for turn on the texture.
Once done import the image, the 3D object should be colored on. Then you will need to re-placing the pieces since the Plotter's width is 3ft, which is totally different than what I have on above. So what I have done is to re-setting the table to 3ft width and test out the best way of placement and everything works out proper. At the end the quality is totally worth to do with.

Extra editing for plotter printing:
Padding
Also the place to change the size of padding is
Setting>>Other Setting>>Other>>Amount of Outline Padding

Chun-Yi Wu: Zodiac Constellation - Leo

Leo is one of the constellations of the zodiac, lying between Cancer to the west and Virgo to the east. Its name is Latin for lion, and to the ancient Greeks represented the Nemean Lion killed by the mythical Greek hero Heracles  as one of his twelve labors.
By the Greek mythology, Leo was identified as the Nemean  Lion, which killed and torn off its skin by Heracles. On mythology Heracles wore Nemean Lion's leather as a armor since the lion was impervious to any weaponry when it was alive.

On my design for Leo this time, no more focus on the character but focus on the part of lion leather cover on a dummy character. Which present as Heracles's lion leather and the Weapon dummy is holding is a symbol of the constellation star of Leo.

After the modeling, again I handing my low resolution model to the rigger David Chiu for set up the rig for Leo

The result just like the image below

For now, the character is on the Pepakura program for laying down, to be continue

Chun-Yi Wu: Zodiac Constellation - Aries

The Second pepakura project I have process is Aries, which present as a female goat. This time I have asked one concept artist to drew me a reference then I'll modeling it in Maya. One of my friend was interest on rigging so I basically asked him to rigged as a try work. Which comes out fine with some poly point fixing.

This project have use the basic animation production process to produce the work flow. which is modeling, rigging, posing and it did helps the quality of the work, but slowing down fore each process of works.

For now what I have done is half of the model printed out

After glue all them up Aries is Half way to the finish product, and one code of the Aqua Gem turns the cardboard like the wooden surface.

Chun-Yi Wu: Zodatic Constellation Pepakura Project- Sagittarius

Continue to my pepakura project the Mermaid I had made from last semester as Aquarius. Then this time is Sagittarius. Which it will be look like a Centaur and its going to be a life size 7.5 feet tall. As what I have said, I'm interest on myth and making these pepakura piece is present as my self in the western culture.  I totally use 13 sheets of 2 x 4 ft card board for this main body piece. Which is the largest one I have done since then.

There's problem comes by which is that its not standing properly . It fall off without support so I have use a wood board glue up with it until making a stand for three foot glue on top.

Chun-Yi Wu Semester2 Project-1: Singing Mermaid_update

This is my second semester for this class and I have an idea after the previous semester last assignment "pepakura"  The Idea is make a live size of the mermaid and paint it over top, if possible making more pepakura animal on the side to create a scene of "a peaceful moment that mermaid singing."

The theory of the mermaid set up as Aquarius is because the idea of symbolization of aqua myth creature, also known as Siren, they using their beautiful voice to Lured the sailor to their death.
Progress:
Week 6 : modeling finished and unwrapping
working: pepakura unwrapping and placing

Here are some images of building up

Chun-Yi Wu: Assignment 6 Geometric Unfold

On this assignment I choose to make a Rhombicosidodecahedron
since this assignment is just for practice of our final assignment pepakura, I'm not going to make my self hard to make it out but still I did it in Adobe Illustrator and and export to Rhino
And this is my lay out of this assignment

Chun-Yi Wu: Project-6 Waffle Lamp

On this project I was totally lost at the beginning, then I figure out just make a basic shape for sure so I choose this cup as my base model to design out my lamp since I love these kind of the cups.
source: http://blog2.naramachitachibana.com/?cid=7
I made a base shape in Maya and smooth it hardly so it wont have so many hard edge then import it in to Rhino to make out the shape by the suggestion from video "contour" and "slice" tool are easy work out. Then I went to Home Depo for a 0.220 inches acrylic board as my material board.

Here are the actual view of my Lamp structure.
