Anisha Chaudhary Week 12: Architectonic Lamp

Concept:
For the grillage lamp, I wanted to make a simple piece that I could construct easily, since this is my first time creating this. I like simple lantern shapes so I thought I would start out with that. I then made it a little bit more unique since I made it have curves like a flower. I made my piece symmetrical and used many panels to cut out light as much as possible. The center is a straight cylinder that is cut open with a grid all over it.

Modeling Techniques:
I started with a single parabaloid. I then used the Array Polar command to duplicate this shape around the origin. I combined the objects together. I used Boolean Difference to take out the center, which was 5 inches in diameter. I then proceeded to the steps of contouring and splitting to create my panels. I created 10 Radial panels and 6 Vertical panels. I made the bottom panel have a 1" opening so that I had the option of adding a light source. I used the pipes to create the notches, which are about .19" since the plywood is that thick. I then used the split command to take out the notches. After laying out my panels using the Massive Unroll script on e-learning, I took the model

Materials:
In keyshot I used an emissive light on the lightbulb that I found online. I used Walnut for my wood, and rubber tire for the chord.
I used the same material that I used for my serial slice project. I bought Cherry Plywood from home depot since it has a beautiful color. The sides where it is burned contrasts well with the face of the panel.  Instead of an electric light, I decided to use a tealight candle to put inside of a vase that would be placed in the center of my piece. I was very happy to find a vase that was the same height as the center that complimented the flower shape of the lamp. I may try and experiment more by putting beads to hold the candle in place and add pops of color.

Anisha Chaudhary: Week 04 Hammer






Concept:
For my hammer model, I imagined a fighter from a video game using a long hammer as a spear. I looked up references of hammers that are used in Anime and found many female fighters that would use a long hammer, usually slung behind their shoulders with some decoration that represents the character at the end of it. I liked the idea of making the hammer appear heavy, and I also like that it looks like a mixture of a claw hammer and a sledgehammer.

Modeling Techniques:
I blocked out the main pieces and separated them in Maya. I started with the hammer head as a rectangular prism and created a smaller cube for the claw and elongated it. I changed the vertices at the claw to make it appear smaller as it gradually went further from the hammer head. I merged the claw with the head and I used a bend deform to make the hammer have a bend as it went down to the claw. This is the main reason I did the blocking out in Maya because I wasn't sure how to create that effect of a bent claw in Rhino. I then created the top piece and handle using a cylinder and resizing it's bottom vertices, and then added a sphere and a two cylinders for the bottom piece as decoration. I then took my model into Rhino. I had some trouble with this at first. It was an issue with my model being a closed mesh instead of a closed poly surface, but this was solved by typing in the command "Mesh to Nurbs". I then made the opening of the claw by creating a curve, revolving it, then using the command "Boolean2Objects". I went back and filleted the entire hammer. I think the mistake I made was blocking this object out in Maya, because there are many obvious faces showing in the cylinders for the handle and bottom decoration.

Materials:
The materials I chose were chosen so that it looked like a Knight's weapon. I chose Brass Rough for the handle piece and the end piece as decoration. I chose black walnut as my wood for the pole to make it look old fashioned and used. I chose Anodized Silver as the metal for my hammer's head. I thought this silver made the hammer appear very heavy.

Anisha Chaudhary: Week 3 LED Flashlight Sleeve


My concept was based around a young child's toy flashlight. I tried making it cute and simplistic.
I looked up images of toy flashlights but the ones that showed up were for very young toddlers. This flashlight caters to maybe a 10 year old child who is into magical wand and fairy like objects.

I decided to keep the same cylindrical design as the template just to avoid issues with inserting the LED light. I added cones and spheres to the top of the flashlight to make decoration and have a clear indication of which side the light should be coming from. I think this is a good element of design because it makes the top part look busy, and it is complete using a torus underneath it to cover the tips of the cones. I made stars using cones and a sphere as well. I started with cone and then used the polar array command to make the 5 cones go around perfectly to create a star. I used the polar array command a lot in this model to evenly space objects. I also used Boolean difference to make the indents on the sides of this flashlight. I am a little concerned about the fillets that I put to smooth out the indents, they look like they have small black lines around them when I render my piece.

I chose pink plastic for my flashlight's body, yellow gems for the stars, and pink gems for the top pieces and stripes. I did this to make a magical aesthetic.
