Renae Patoskie Week 8: Serial Slices

For the Serial Slices project I was inspired by the texture possibilities.



This technique has been used to create ambiguous, resemble contour mapping, or simply visual textures. I wanted to apply this visual texture into a common place object.






My goal was to create a similar texture to the one featured in the figure on the left, while creating a visually pleasing bowl inspired by the figure on the right.


To create this model, I created a series of 6 curves using the sketch tool. I then aligned the three surface points so that the bowl would be sufficiently balanced. I then lofted between the curves to create the outside surface. I then duplicated the surface, offset it above the outside surface and then sheared off the excess to create a flat edge on the top using the trim tool. I then used sweep two rails to create a surface between the inner and outer surfaces.


Due to the non-uniform thin outlines, it took 3 sheets of 24"x 48" mdf to print this project.

David Chiu Week 7 Project 3: Serial Slicing




For this project, I reused the flashlight tube from the previous assignment. After I did the extrusions and rendered the contoured flashlight, I noticed that the slices didn't work that well with the brick wall on the side of the tube.

For week 6, we were given the task of creating a geometric shape that could be sliced into pieces for laser cutting and assembly.

    I have contoured a model that I created in maya for laser cutting. The model, while simplistic, becomes difficult to piece together as it curves. However, with clever placement of the support pipes, the model would look great!


The overall model is a cube that was twisted in Maya, then sliced vertically sliced to provide the contour. The model was then given supports that will support the model as it turns.


The inspiration for this piece came from one of the several different lamps that I have stationed around my apartment. However, the overall shape has changed to be more rectangular.

I like the overall design, and am thinking to make a different version in the future!
