Ed Whetstone: Project 1, 3D-Print (Art-Deco Owl)

This post has all the content for Assignment 1, the 3D Printing project.

See all updates below the fold!

Week 1:

first draft of model

I have a big fascination with art deco, which uses lots of straight lines and wing motifs.  The first draft of the model pulled from architectural elements as inspiration:

Owl motifs aren't super common, but they make the occasional appearance.  I started out just figuring out the shapes for a barn-owl style head

owls have a very complex face shape, due to the arrangement of their feathers.  I simplified to the point of abstraction.

All elements were polygon modeled in Maya

The first draft had three major flaws:

  1. the wings are too thin for 3d printing
  2. no base it won't be able to stand alone
  3. the design just doesn't have the full-on art-deco feel that I was going for
Week 2-3

The final draft re-works the wings and adds a base and legs:

ultimately, as befits something in the art-deco/streamline moderne style, I'd love to see this piece in variations of black and chrome

This was the final version sent to shapeways:

  1. Nice work. It is probably the wings up top at the ends. If you bring those in you may lose some of the dynamics but it will solve your thinness problem. The last big question is the base. Do you have plans to resolve that??
