Justin Chang: Week 11 Polyhedra

Concept: The inspiration for my design are pillars used as supportive structural elements that are commonly used to withstand the weight of a roof or upper floors of a building. They also are sometimes used as decorative pieces to compliment the architectural design of a building.

Techniques: The design was obtained online and saved as a PDF file. Then it opened in Adobe Illustrator and pasted on a 48x24 template. The outer and inner cut layers were created so the laser cutter can recognize where to cut. Dashed lines were established for the inner cuts and set at the appropriate stroke to prevent the laser cutter from cutting the dashed lines twice. To create individual line segments, the angle threshold was adjusted to 170 degrees. Rhino was used to check for duplicate lines and repair as necessary by utilizing the explode command until the dashed lines turn from block instances to curves.

Materials: Cardboard was used as the material to be laser cut; adhesive was used to put the pieces together.
