Lauren Barbieri Week 11:laser engrave



concept
I drew this last year and have been waiting for an excuse to use it in something. A running theme in all my sketchbooks is these monstrous wolf creatures that pop up every 3 months or so. 

techniques
first I imported it into photoshop and sharpened and contrasted the image, then I moved into rhino to create the lines using network curves. Which didn't turn out quite as exciting as I hoped, so I imported the curves back into photoshop and made copies and fiddled with opacity finally adding a layer of generated fog.

concept for Materials
The panel of wood I will use is going to be split into 2 halves. I'll sand them lightly and stain both different colors. I think the actual finished product will be more subtle in the color difference and have it reflect color but this render was meant to show the variation of the color. I want to have a Finish with a reasonably high gloss to pop the color.

I printed it and lightly sanded it, but I have yet to find a stain or die that interacts with the wood quite the way I was looking for. Still, I think the unfinished, unstained version looks fairly impressive. 




Anisha Chaudhary Week 11: Laser Engraving


Concept:
For my Laser Engraving Project I decided to use an outline of a sculpture that I had made in a previous sculpture class. I really like the expression in the sculpture and I think the lines across this cat's face will turn out interesting when engraved into wood. This project is supposed to show the life of an aggressive alley cat. I got inspiration from Jordan Debney when creating this, since he has a variety of thick lined drawings that have a similar expression. His art work can be found on Instagram or online.

Techniques:
I used a bamboo tablet on Photoshop and traced the image directly. I went back and added cross hatching to indicate the dark spots and shadows on the cat. For the background, I looked up images of trashcans, milk cartons, fish bones, rotten bananas, and yarn. For the banana, milk carton, and trashcan, I directly traced a .png. For the rest I took creative license to make the fish bones and yarn, since those are a lot less simple.

Materials:
I will be using my cherry plywood to engrave this image. I am thinking of painting sections after with some acrylic or gouache paint. I plan to paint the eyes green, the fur white, and the tongue a bright pink. For the background, I will paint a section of the milk carton blue and white. The banana will be yellow with brown showing through. The trashcan I might paint a silver color if I have that in acrylics. I will leave the fish bone alone and I will paint the yarn with orange.

I am going to take this image into illustration so that I can create curves to put into Rhino.










When I was working with the curves in Rhino, I struggled to create hatches inside of my thick lines. I think the mistake I made was drawing this piece in Photoshop instead of Illustrator, since it may have been easier if I had drawn AND traced in Illustrator. I decided to just engrave this piece as hairline outlines. I have changed my medium to Prisma colors

Brandon Wehenkel: Longboard Engraving

Concept:

I don't skate.  My brother does.  Since he does I asked him what he wanted on the bottom of his longboard.  When I was younger I got an email while I was away from home that my brother had broken his collar bone while longboarding down a steep hill.  He told me he wanted an omage to his collar bone on his longboard.  Longboard  Inspiration

Modeling Techniques:
I uploaded the images to photoshop and photomanipulated the images to the longboard example I gave in the concept.  I used curves and saturation to create a very blown out image.  I used various tools in photoshop: eliptical, rectangular, magic wand, quick selection tool, brush tool, spot healing brush, healing brush, patch tool, eraser, paint bucket, lasso tool, eyedropper.

I ended up ditching the Rhino & Illustrator idea and just manipulating the image in photoshop till I got a very different appearance.  The design wasn't very cooperative with the laser engraver so I ended up enhancing the contrast with the exposure setting.  I adjusted gamma to .26 (almost all the way to the right) and I adjusted the exposure to multiple different spots: I started on a lower adjustment of +1 and I believe I adjusted it to +14 for the final design.  Because of this I lost a significant amount of detail.
I had also used pixelation and greyscale to my advantage to get more detail out of the shadows that I wanted in the X-ray, without the pixelation I would have lost all detail.

Materials:
The longboard is made of pine.  I did a test on Oak because I had an excess of that wood at home.  Its an expensive test, but I didn't want the wood to go to waste.  I ended up not doing a 2nd test and just editing the design five different times to be printed on the pine board.
I used a spray on sealant to clean up the exposed laser engraved areas.  But I didn't want to use paint on with a brush because I fear that I might have some slight clumping in the pixelated area.

Michael Crow - Week 11: Laser Engraving: Deck

  • Each persons skateboard Deck is meant to showcase who they are. In this case the person I am making a board for has an online persona named Cody, a DJ, skating Dog, much like McGruff, the crime dog. I wanted to make sure this board was unique for him. With a custom hand drawn image. His name and a backdrop logo of his favorite skateboarding company in the background.

 From this point I had to try several different techniques to get the best representation of the regional image and nice background. Starting with the One Touch software I started with Posterized images, and found that I really liked the fully colored image much more. Knowing that I changed the way the background was displayed to better show the "DC" Logo. After seeing how the deeper levels came out io Decided to keep the background as a Raster and simply go in and cut the Name and Chest Tattoo deeper to help them stand out, as they got lost in the test engravings. In final I moved a grey scale version into Illustrator and using Image trace I cut out pieces I liked to engrave deeper.

  • This test and adjust approach allowed me to do several low cost small test runs with the laser at different Powers and will help the skateboard look clean and help keep away from any major burns. As well as to help make the whole image pop across the board.

Taking this knowledge I moved and redesigned the Imgae to allow for a culmination o the two designs. I kept the gradient fade from the supposed final design, and the colors and raster from the first design. Which left a much better contrast between the name and he logos on the board as seen in Fig. 3

A deep ebony stain was applied into the groves for the name and the characters dog paw tattoo, to help them stand out from the other engraving and help the viewers eye continually circle around the board as seen in Fig. 4

Finally I applied a triple thick coating of Polyurethane across the whole board 3 times, sanding the ridges and each coat with 400 and 800 grit sandpaper to help remove any imperfections caught in the coat and to help the next layer stick and have more surface area to maintain a better hold. Which gives the board enough protection to be used or displayed without worry. It also leaves it with a slightly glassy and buttery feel up close but without removing an detail from the board itself.

Finally we have the finished product ready to be shipped to the patron, who is exstatic with the results!

Renae Patoskie Week 11: Lamp

In most of the examples for the Architectonic Lamp project, a shape was used to create the lattice structure. I wanted to use multiple forms to create something more active and engaging. 

To create the model I drew separate outline curves for the two different layers. I then revolved them, and took a single section slice which I then used the polar array to equidistance my slates around the form. I repeated this concept with the other shape. I then found the innermost points of each object and inserted circular planes to hold the outer shapes together, careful to leave ample room for a spherical lightbulb.

After using the CutMyRibs script to create my slots, there were a lot of overhangs, to simplify the clean-up process, I simply corrected a single outline of each form and then duplicated each 7 times to get my outer shapes.

Kristine Dickson: Week 11 Radial Waffle Lamp

The lamp I had in mind would be something that covered the top of a post, like on railing or a balustrade. I wanted it to be rounded on top and taper in a bit around the lower half.

When I was modeling it, I tried using the a lathe tool in 3ds Max to create the entire thing using splines, but I could not get the the shape that I wanted out of it. Instead, I ended up joining half a sphere to a cylinder and squeezing the middle of the cylinder in to give it the curvature I wanted. I then pulled the top part of the cylinder out a little bit so the hemisphere was nested in it.

In Keyshot, I chose to use the Mahogany wood texture, with a couple slices in 24k Gold. I liked how the light inside brightened the wood texture on the inside; it contrasted nicely with the dark wood texture around the outside. I chose the gold material for the middle ring and the top ring to mimic gold trimming if the model were solid and not a waffle structure. It also brought a little variety to the lamp.

David Billings: week 11 : lamp

 My design intent when creating this piece was to have a radial lamp that could be displayed from either the top facing upwards or on its head. Additionally I wanted a lamp that would have a contrast between these two ends that allowed for a distinction between organic and hard surfaces. Inspiration for this came from lamps with contrasting shapes between their shades and bases and then applying that concept to the serialized form.

This was created in Rhino using 3 base shapes, a sphere, a cone, and a pyramid. Once they were booleaned together I elongated it to a desirable size and proportion then used the provided scripted to serial slice the model.

The materials I chose to represent this model in keyshot were a blue resin and a red metal with a specular finish. I chose these because they seemed to allow the lamp to be placed easily within a modern setting or environment.
