William McKiernan-Castle

I wanted to keep a traditional castle design yet also include some futuristic elements. I drew inspiration from Star Wars and placed the castle upon floating platforms, while also fortifying those platforms with medieval style towers. I also drew in some Roman elements with the columns and arched walkways. The conical roof gives the castle a less threatening, almost circus tent-esque look which makes it less foreboding.
I used very primitive shapes to create most of my castle. The main body of the castle is simply a cylindrical extrusion with walkways formed from rectangular extrusions that were subtracted with a Boolean. The flag on top is two handmade curves that were lofted to create a surface. The platforms on which it rests are offset ellipsis. The columns and towers were both placed using the polar array tool, and the archways were placed by hand and formed as a loft.
I wanted to combine past and future in this design, and used futuristic materials when rendering to convey that it is a futuristic work. The main castle is a black cherry metal while the columns are brass and the platforms on which it floats are champagne metal.
