David Hobson: Project 1 Castle

Concept:

My castle model is based around the idea of Brutalist Architecture. For the strangest reason, i am absolutely infatuated with the design style in both architecture and art. To keep with the style, i used minimal shapes that also give a sense of bold structure.

Process:

Initially, I designed the front left tower until I was content with how it looked. it consists of 5 main cubes that i then used Boolean difference to cut through and open the tower and make the slats in the very top. the struts and bars that run the sides of the lower walls are cubes attached together and arrayed over the wall to help create a looming shadow. The main tower is based more on brutalist art and places such as habitat 67 in Montreal. It consists of several blocks stacked and cut into each other to create this odd structure that looms over the rest of the castle. In hindsight I should have made it taller, but as is, i'm happy with its height and shadow.

Materials:

Its Brutalism. The word loosely translates to raw concrete and thus does not leave much in the realm of materials. The outer towers and inner walls are raw concrete with little to no difference in pattern. The accenting struts raw steel, to both keep with the raw nature of the design style and to contrast with the concrete. the main tower is a raw black marble meant to appose the other structures in place that surround it.
