Project 3- Lightsaber David Hobson

Concept:

When scouring the internet for reference images, I found a blog post somewhere with a few of the sabers from the Wookie Jedi. This one stuck out to me for its basic, neutral tones and shape.

Process:

For this project I started with a series of 2D curves and later broke them into 4 main sections and either revolved them around a center point or extruded them to shape. To start, the top has five separate layers, 2 inner rings, a saucer cap, and two extra rings between the wood. The second piece is simply a hexagonal bolt without any rifling. the third section includes a spool shaped figure and two cube extrusions to mock the buttons on the reference. The bottom split into two parts, a second saucer end cap and another polycurve to mock the hand grip.

Materials:

For the materials, I decided to take some artistic liberties with a the addition of a polished copper to break up the steel and adding hints of matte black on the upper rings. As for the wood, I choose to use a darker fine grained wood as it stood out better against the copper rather than the mahogany or cherry wood in examples I saw on the internet.
